FM sounds way better than satellite, and you still have the aux for ipods. I've heard the base and it is decent, nothing wrong with it. Based on what they are asking for the hifi, I'd say stick with the base and get the comfort access. Everyone seems to rave about comfort access, and with the start button it makes sense to order it as otherwise the start button is really a gimmick.

:agree: no questions there Sat radio sound like sh1t...
As for the std vs hifi... well the std is pretty good, you haved to crank the treble to +7 and the base to +4-5 but it is quite impressive for a std system... I have not heard the HiFi but there are three main differences: 300w of power vs 180w DSP processor upgraded speakers Is it worth the extra money? That I am not sure about. The std system was pretty good... but for $875 I am going to go with the HiFi...

I did a quick comparison test starting with the std system. I thought it sounded great and didn't think that the premium was going to be necessary. Then I heard the premium. It sounded significantly more full and crisp. Ultimately, I went with std because I'm a cheap skate and I realize that you can always upgrade after market if you're not happy. But I mostly listen to talk radio so I doubt I'll think twice about it after delivery.
Edit: I ended up going Prem Hi Fi. I don't want to have to go after market.

I am still on the fence about the audio and I just noticed that, contrary to what it says in the brochure and what I thought, it seems the 128i comes with only 6 speakers????? I saw a convertible this weekend and it did not have the subs and I looked at the BMWUSA site and it said 6 speakers...
can anyone confirm? I think this would make a big difference on whether I order the premium or not... and this is the last option I have to decide on!!!! |

I would say go for the $875 option. Its worth it. Also better NOT messing with the nice factory look/install. If you want to really upgrade the standard system I can tell you how without changing the factory radio. But it will cost you plenty. NO need to put an ugly indash in a great car. 100% JL Audio upgrade.

I have the Standard Audio with USB/iPod option and find it very satisfactory. But I'm no audiophile.

if the car came with 6 speakers and no subs then the upgrade would have been a no brainer, I like electronic music so the subs are a must or otherwise everything starts to vibrate.
But since I am not an audiophile a 10 speaker system should be plenty. I will give it another listen before placing the order but I think I will be fine... heck, it's the same price as my stereo at home plus no matter what XM will still sound like crap anyway... |

An addition to my comment about enjoying the standard system: thanks to some help from other 1Addicts, I finally figured out the USB port was for something other than charging the iPod...(yeah, I know).
The standard sounds incredible via the USB port. I am not only pleasantly surprised by the ease of use, but the sound!! And again, I say this as a serious musician, a tone-freak (tone woods on guitars, tubes in amps, et cetera), and a bit of an audiophile... I humbly suggest getting the standard radio with the iPod/USB port... :headbang: |

if you are using a headphone-2-headphone cable from out of your iPod, then the signal is amplified and will give you a whole lot of interference. You can buy a iPod cable that will use the data port, and thus will be the exact same as the BMW solution :headbang: |
