BMW is extending a UK recall of its cars after the BBC's Watchdog found that vehicles could cut out completely while they are being driven - It is recalling 312,000 vehicles: the BMW 1 Series, the 3 Series, the Z4 and its X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-44050686

If this has already been posted, my bad couldn't find it after searching.

Has anyone already had this recall done?

This is from the Watchdog website

BMW INVESTIGATION - 9th May 2018

On tonight’s programme, BMW announced a recall of more than 311,000 vehicles, following a Watchdog Live investigation.
In 2017, BMW recalled petrol vehicles built between December 2009 and August 2011, a period of production where a particular design of wiring configuration meant that vehicle vibrations could potentially cause frictional corrosion on the plug of the power distributor. But Watchdog was contacted by other BMW owners whose cars were not covered by the recall, but had lost power, sometimes while driving.

BMW told Watchdog : “We now recognise that there may have been some cases of similar power supply issues in vehicles not covered by the original recall. In order to reassure customers with concerns about the safety of their vehicles, we are voluntarily extending the recall. We are therefore announcing today that we will take the proactive step of expanding the existing UK recall to cover all vehicles potentially affected by the power supply issue – namely BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, Z4 and X1 petrol and diesel models produced between March 2007 and August 2011”.

Customers with concerns or queries can call BMW’s special customer services line on 0800 083 4397. Lines will be open during and following the programme until 10:30pm tonight, 09/05/2018.

BMW has also supplied the following information:

What does the recall involve?

Replacing the B+ battery connector with an improved plug design to prevent frictional corrosion.

Which vehicles are affected?

Predecessor generations of the 1 Series, 3 Series, Z4 and X1 built between March 2007 and September 2011 (inclusive).

How will customers be contacted?

BMW will be contacting all affected customers by post advising them of how they can book their car in to have the work carried out.

When will the recall commence?

The DVSA has already been notified of the recall. BMW is in the process of obtaining registration data through the DVLA for all affected owners and will commence contacting affected customers in the next three weeks.

How long will the repair take?

The work should take no more than two hours.

Where can I find details of my nearest BMW Centre?

Please click on the “Find a BMW Centre” link on www.bmw.co.uk

How much will it cost?

There will be no cost to the customer.

Someone on one of the UK facebook groups posted yesterday about a recall on injectors - a new one which was called an "enhancement recall".

In this episode they covered the recalled electrical fault in the heating system in a 3 Series in the USA as well as a power cable failure in the glove box area in a 3 Series in the UK.

It sounds like BMW have now admitted that the 1 Series is also affected if I am right?

Sorry I forgot to mention that you can only watch the program online here in the UK, I am glad you found a link on Youtube as I was in the middle of uploading a clip that I created by filming my TV with my camera.

This is what I'm wondering, it is also very annoying that the dealers just shrug their shoulders and say they haven't heard of such a recall.

You can check if your vehicle is part of any recalls here.

What is the vehicle's registration number?
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

This is a print screen that I captured after entering my reg number.

Sorry for the poor quality of the video clip.

No real update for UK 1 Series owners.

BMW are however now recalling another 88,000 UK 3 Series owners vehicles with a separate issue, the vehicles affected were built between December 2004 and July 2011.

BMW says that it will be replacing the wiring harness of the Blower regulator.

PS: If anyone posts on the 3 Series Forum would you like to pass on the info please as I only use this Forum.

I managed to get the Recall work booked in yesterday the 1st of June for next Wednesday the 6th of June.

They originally told me that I would have to wait untill August to have the Recall work done, but some how they managed to book me in early when I said that my car was also due a service.

Doe's anyone know if the B+ Power lead is visable if you drop down the glovebox to look at the fuses?

I may be completly wrong but I paused the video clip while watching the watchdog episode on the TV and read the top of the BMW document which had the following number written on top of the page.

Doe's anyone know if I am on the right track, if so did you Americans have this fault fixed in 2011??

I have just spotted this info on the bottom of the key reader print out that was also taken on the 1st of June.

Also the three week time period has passed since BMW told Watchdog that they would contact all the relevant BMW owners that are affected by the recall.

Lucky, the dealer just shrugs and tells me there is nothing to be done.

Are you in the Pacific Northwest "PNW" region of the western United States?

If so why not print this document and show it to the dealer as it is a USA document, forum member "Estaban" is in the USA as well so it may be worth asking him if he has already had the work done or not.

Estaban has posted further up up the page on this thread.

If the link doesn't work send me your email address via PM and I will email you a copy.

As I said earlier in this thread, I had the battery cable recall done a few years ago. As far as I know, all US 1ers had it done, or should've had it done.

Cmoney135i, in case you haven't had it done or are not sure if it has been done, you can enter the last 7 of your VIN here to check to see if you have any open recalls. Assuming that you are in the US.

Note: not positive the recall I had done is the same recall that is the subject of this thread.

Well I have had the recall work done, bit of a none event really as there was nothing to see that was interesting for us 1Addicts enthusiasts.

The car was in and out in five hours and I had an engine oil service, brake flluid change and the Air Conditioning Recharge done as well.

The mechanic let me see the car when it was pulled apart and they gave me the old wire, the mechanic also took a couple of photos for me to put on the thread.

The service advisor asked me not to put a photo of the wire on here and I wont as it’s the first time I have used this particular garage and I want to use them in the future as I don’t trust my local stealers.

They cut about eight inches of the end of the wire and it looks like they drilled a tiny hole in part of the dash mount to fix a cable tie.

A massive bonus for me was that they also moved my tracker aerial / antenna which was strapped to the dash support beam up into the A-pillar, the tracking company had conveniently told me that the tracker signal was week after the tracker unit warranty had run out.
I paid extra for a Lifetime tracker and tracker company failed to contact me when the tracker unit warranty renewal date was due.

RECALL INFORMATION.

BMW UK has initiated two separate Safety Recall actions on various BMW models, relating to issues with:
• B+ Battery connector;
• Blower regulator connection.
To understand if your vehicle is currently involved in one of these recalls, please visit the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website: https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall

Background information relating to the B+ battery connector recall.
Following an ongoing quality analysis at BMW, it has been determined that the plug-in contact of the positive battery cable on the front power distribution box can become damaged. This is caused by vehicle vibrations and frictional corrosion, together with a high load current. As a result, damage to the plug-in contact can impair the power supply of the vehicle.

Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is important to note the early symptoms detailed below:
• The vehicle central locking system fails sporadically
• It is no longer possible to start the engine
• Flickering of the instrument panel
• Jerking or momentary power loss from the engine whilst driving
If the above early symptoms are ignored, a loss of electrical power and cutting out of the engine may occur.

Which vehicles are affected:
The B+ battery connector recall affects certain selected vehicles of the predecessor generations of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW Z4 and BMW X1 from the production period March 2007 to September 2011 inclusive.

BMW Z4 (E89) Produced from 02/12/2008 to 30/11/2009
BMW X1 (E84) Produced from 19/08/2009 to 15/06/2011
BMW 1 Series 3-door (E81) Produced from 19/02/2007 to 09/07/2011
BMW 1 Series Coupé (E82) Produced from 29/08/2007 to 09/07/2011
BMW 1 Series (E87) Produced from – 08/02/2007 to 30/06/2011
BMW 1 Series 5-door (E88) Produced from 26/09/2007 to 09/07/2011
BMW 3 Series Saloon (E90) Produced from 12/02/2007 to 30/06/2011
BMW 3 Series Touring (E91) Produced from 21/02/2007 to 30/06/2011
BMW 3 Series Coupé (E92) Produced from 13/02/2007 to 11/07/2011
BMW 3 Series Convertible (E93) Produced from 13/02/2007 to 11/07/2011

Background information relating to the to the blower regulator connection recall.
The blower-regulator controls the blower-motor’s fan speed within the heating and air conditioning system. BMW have discovered that irregularities in the connection together with the movement of the tin-coated connector at the end of the wiring harness could lead to frictional corrosion. This, in combination with very high current flow may lead to a temperature increase.

For vehicles affected, the blower-regulator wiring harness will need to be inspected and a new part will be installed.

Which vehicles are affected:
The blower regulator connection recall affects the certain previous generation models of the BMW 3 Series, produced from October 2004 to May 2011.

BMW 3 Series Saloon (E90) Produced from 15/10/2004 to 08/07/2011
BMW 3 Series Touring (E91) Produced from 22/04/2005 to 08/07/2011
BMW 3 Series Coupé (E92) Produced from 20/04/2006 to 27/05/2011
BMW 3 Series Convertible (E93) Produced from 28/11/2006 to 27/05/2011

Frequently Asked Questions.
