Owners of BOTH cars, which do you prefer? If forced to choose, which would you keep as a DD? In particular the 997 or 991 vs the 1M.

I have two kids so that settles it for me. The back seat rules. Which one do you enjoy more? Just drive the one you enjoy more. You can always have a 911, but 1Ms are not as common so again the 1M wins for me. It's a tough question if you don't care for the back seat. You almost sound like Brad Pitt..... Guys. I don't know. Should I keep Gwynneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie? Good luck.

not a 1M owner but n54 135i, 993 carrera (sold), 996 GT3 (sold), 997GT3
as far as driving experience goes there's something exhilarating and unique about the rear engine placement that really makes the 911 stand out. you feel very involved and connected however nachob does make a good point about uniqueness of 1M

Hi 1MVO, I had a 997 Carrera 4 (325hp) as a DD + 3-4 trackdays a year.
The 1M is much more easy everyday, especially that my work forces me to get in & out lots of times, and if you've got children, it's not so safe at the back of the Porsche, much safer in the 1M. It seems that the 991 is 3inches (10cm) bigger, so maybe you've got little more space for the legs at the rear seats...but it couldn't match I think. The 911 is a Myth, and in good shape, with a pretty low mileage, after some years it will keep a good value. The 1M is young, and we cannot estimate how its price will evolve in the future. Personnaly, I HAD to sell the 997 because of several reasons (taxes here in Belgium, maintenance prices, became too small for my growin' children...) otherwise, I would have keep the Porsche a little bit longer for sure. Anyway the 1M is a great mix for biffy DD / performing tracktoy.

After a year with my 1M, I had test driven several vehicles and none had the same visceral acceleration combined with nimble steering. After getting my hands on a MANUAL 997 Carrera base model, however, I was truly impressed. The linear acceleration of the 911 is addictive. Oh decisions!

I had a 997 GT3 for 6 mos (instructor rolled us at the track, first DE, totalled!), but even tho have GTI as DD, I like the 1M better than the GT3 because great fun to drive, very unique, easy on the body and can carry my bike inside! Exhaust note is main thing I miss and maybe the steering, but I don't miss the tendency to go off the road backwards even in VERY experienced hands! Torque on 1M is highly addictive for street driving. Taking to the track (a safer one!) this weekend for first time, so see how does there.

As a DD can't go past the 1M. Plenty practical, good power, excellent steering, has lots of features and the most important thing it's freakin fun!!!!
At the end of the day it comes personal preference but I choose cars by what is more fun to drive... Enjoy the decision making! |

Have owned a 996C2 and 997C2 and whilst the 997 was a great car I prefer the 1M, in everyday driving feel it's as quick. The 1M is so easy to place on the road.

This is great input. Thank you all. Seems the best option is to have both....which may entail some serious negotiation with my better half! Any opinions regarding the fit/finish of the 911 vs 1M. I feel my 1M could be a little bit better assembled.

A friend of mine, who is not a car guy at all, said to me today, 'your car is like a four wheel motorcycle'. IMO this is one of the best compliments one can pay to the 1M.
Of all the cars I have owned/driven over the years, the closest to the feeling I get from the 1M was from a 1985 Mazda RX7 GSL SE I had many years ago. Dunno, something about the simplicity, easy power slides, etc. Having said that, I have never owned a 911 but plan to. I think any piston-head has to at some point regardless of how it compares to other cars. |

Quality and linear power are hallmarks of the Porsche but does it make a better daily driver? Angelina Jolie might have more admirers but is she better for YOU to live with day in and day out than your wife/girlfriend? Yorkeys might have more pedigree but I still prefer my old fun-loving friendly good-with-kids Labrador Retriever.

Mikey, the great tech writer for Roundel, famously described BMW's as "expensive and built to stay that way!" Same applies double to Porsche's and quadruple to Ferrari. No comparing paint on my GT3 to the orange peel on my VO 1M, and Porsche's are no doubt reliable, but the routine maintenance is very expensive even compared to a Bimmer...

I have owned two 911's (997 C2S and 997TT). I LOVED both of them, but ended up keeping them for much less than I thought. I had the C2S for only about 9 months. Had HRE wheels, Bilstein coils, headers, AWE high flow cats and exhaust. Just a beast of a car and so much fun! Ended up selling it and getting an e92 M3 which I had for almost three years. Sold the M3, bought a used 997TT CPO with only 11k miles on her. I have never driven a car with so much power and straight line punch as that 997TT. It was intoxicating!!! But I felt out of place with such a nice car in the city I live in. Plus I rarely drove it. So ended up selling it and picked up the 1M.
So what are my thoughts? The 911 is nowhere near practical enough as a daily driver., especially if it will be your only car. I felt very awkward going to the grocery store, Walmart, etc in a 911. Also, if more than one friend is visiting you and/or they have anything larger than one 27" suitcase you are out of luck. Then there is the potential RMS issue with the non-turbo 911's. The M cars offer similar performance and are SOOO much more practical IMHO.

As an owner of a 996 C4S and a 1M I would say they are completely different cars. If I had to settle for which was the most fun to drive it would be the 1M. If I had to pick which was the most practical it would be the 1M. If I had to pick which drew the most attention it would be the Porsche. All in all I would pick the 1M as the better car hands down.

I currently have a DD (also the "practical" car) and a fun car.
My 1M is barely versatile enough to qualify as the "practical" car, which means four people, fold down seats, cargo space. Not as practical as my previous 4wd, but practical enough. No 911 makes my current bar as a "practical" car, and frankly the 1M is the most "fun" car that meets my definition of "practical" car I can think of. My 911 is not practical by any stretch, but as an adrenaline hit it blows the 1M away. Way, way over the top to be a DD, however. It all comes down to your definition of DD. If all I was doing was getting to work and back, budget uncontrained, and I had a 997 C4 or a GT3 in the garage next to the a 1M, frankly I don't know which one I'd take most days. It would be close, which in itself is saying something. Living in the US on less demanding roads/ highways I'd probably take the 1M more often. When I lived in Germany I'd probably take the 911- better for the autobahn.

back seat space was on my feature wishlist and thus I decided to try out the back seat of the most gorgeous 993 Targa.
That's where I've been till today as I have since been been stuck in it ever since; If you ever see an adult in the back of a 911, be a hero and save their life! (It could be me) |

Thank you for all the input!!!! This is great! Has anyone had experience with the 991? It is rumored to be a better DD than the 997....thoughts?

Not a 911 owner but I've been using my CaymanS for a DD everyday for the last 4 -1/2 months, the 1M has been sitting in the garage. I expected to be swapping back and forth but my 987 has turned out to be a great DD, I live in the city and I've had no issue at all with traffic etc. (manual) The new 991 is a great car and would be as good or better (more fun) than a 1M as long as missing actual rear seats and limited storage space is OK with you. I love my 1M, but a 991 (I've driven 2, 1 on the track and 1 one the street, 1 manual 1 PDK) would be my choice between the two.

Well, I came across a 991 base with manual tranny (not a simple feat) and went for a little test drive. Having already driven a 997 Carrera with stick, my expectations were high based on all the press. We were given the keys and told to take it for a spin. I asked the salesperson if he was not going to accompany us....he said "no." My wife and I stepped in, we both grinned. Adjusted mirrors and seats....took a big breath....and set off. My wife looked at me and said, "floor it!" I told her I already had. "Really?," she retorted. Ahhhh yes....there is nothing like the unbiased opinion of the female derriere. The 991 was...underwhelming. While a great, beautiful, and exceedingly competent car, it lacks the nimble ferocity of our little M-Car. It's a razor blade while the 1M is a scalpel. It's Ronaldo while the 1M is Messi. I really wanted to love the 991. I could not. After climbing back into my 1M, my grin resurfaced to the soundtrack of that 6 cylinder TT. What a car! In all honesty, the 991 was a pretty thing; but, it felt like driving a Panamera. All tech and no soul. The 997 is definitely a better alternative to the 1M in terms of driving experience in my humble opinion.
