Careful about the subject line... You will get passionate emotional answers from both sides. Those with N55 will recommend that engine and those with N54 will swear by it.

I would look for objective reviews.... just saying.

YEP!..... N55 all the way....yeah you can wring a little more power out of the n54 and thats because the two smaller turbos can effectively flow just a bit more air that the larger single on the n55....BUT.... the N55 has what is pretty much a cam on demand with the valvetronic technology.... meaning as soon as a turbo upgrade comes out for the n55 it will have the ability to produce more power more efficiently!

i havent heard anything about an HPFP issue with the n55... but i dont know everything nor do i claim to....

and the n55 is a little more efficient and produces less green house gasses crap!

but both are GREAT engines!

now that being said, i have a great one already modded to the T up for sale

If you want to tune and add lots of power mods then N54 is a better way to go. It is stronger and more tunable.

The N55 is a more modern engine with better technology, yet more complicated.

Depends what you want to use the car for?
a lot of how well a motor holds up to higher HP and TQ is about tuning... you can blow up either motor or make one fail jsut with bad tunning,... proper air flow fuel delivery and all the extra tuning stuff that goes along with it... that said... in my opinion they will reach about the same level of power before failure...

and ive seen where the n54 has Mahle pistons and forged rods i think, ..i could be wrong.... but i havnt seen anything from BMW that says the N55 internals arnt forged of up to par.
could you post that please.
and one last thing....under the engine cover there is another little black plastic cover that sits on the valve cover and it reads MAHLE.....

i dont know , i would like to see the info that i keep hearing about N55's
