You also get the fin with the "Sat RAdio" Prep option ($75).

I can confirm this... my car only has Sat. radio prep, and it has the fin.

This is a very good question.
I've seen about 14 E90s in the US in the last week. All that I've seen have the fin. Not all of them had assist or satellite radio, though. It's beginning to look to me like all cars have it regardless of the electronics features they offer.
Have to say I'm not a fan of the fin--looks extraneous to me, like some kind of party hat. Has anyone seen a US car without it?

I wonder if its only the 3 series that uses the fin. I have an X5 with B-tooth and Assist, but no fin..Although I dont think it would look very nice on a truck anywway...

My 320 wont have the fin because I refused to pay for the Sat Nav etc just to have the fin.

Dont get me wrong I love would to get one at some point just to finish the car off but I aint buying the Sat Nav or Assist.

Here in the USA I think they come on the car regardless of options, I just was at the dealer and they had all kinds fully loaded and also bare bone no options, they all had the fin, I prsonally think it does add a nice touch by the way.

It could be because the car has some sort of preparation. In SA as someone said earlier, all the cars have phone prep. so they all come with the fin. I personally like it, maybe they can call this the dolphin shape aswell!?!?

Sorry for reviving an old topic, but I don't think this one was fully resolved.

Anyone able to confirm whether or not the fins come in different external shapes based on options. If so, can anyone post pics of all the different fins (and note which fins come with which options.)

Bottom line for me: I really want a fin, but didn't order nav, assist, or sat. prep. Some have said that all US-spec cars have the fin; I'm hoping this is true (crosses fingers).

Sounds like you and E90Newbie (post before yours) may need to switch cars. You drive from Virginia. He'll head over from Seattle and you can swith rides somewhere in Minnesota. Problem solved!!

It may not have made any difference anyway. I also prefer the car without the fin. However, I'm not sure any U.S. E90s come without the fin. I've seen a lot of E90s in this country and all have the fin. Has anyone seen a U.S. version of the car without it or does anyone know about this?

Ahhhh..... waiting for a new car is such a pain....My car is in production and completion date is June 14th. How long does it take till I actually get the car?

In canada, My dealer said this:

All 330i's come with the fin regardless of pkgs or options.
Only 325i's with sport or premium pkg come with fin.
Plain jane 325's=no fin

I am probably repeating what other people have said...but I have just come back from my dealership... i saw a bare bones 325i and it had the fin. ALL 7 - 10 cars I saw today had the fin. So as of now, we can finalize this theory (till someone proves it wrong):

A salesguy at a local dealership told me that the fin is only for BMW assist & nav functions. He said that if you get sat radio they need to install another, separate antenna on the trunk.

I sincerely hope he is wrong, as I'm sure the extra antenna will look hobbyshop. If I wanted an extra antenna I could always buy an aftermarket SIRIUS or XM radio and save a lot of $$$.

Anyone else heard this?

Your salesguy is wrong. Can't believe how uninformed they can get.
But is has been mentioned here in the forum that the sat prep antenna actually resides in the area behind the rear seat headrests.
In the cloth between the speakers or something like that.

All configurations of the fin uses the same "housing", no different shape depending on if it supports GPS, GSM or Sat.
