Quaife, The Ultimate Differential is now in stock for your 135i at HP Autowerks, Inc.
"The Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing Helical LSD Differential enables a car to accelerate more rapidly and corner faster. How? Simply by getting the power to the ground. With an normal open differential, fitted as standard on most cars, much precious power is wasted through wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip - along the path of least resistance. The Quaife differential, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has the better grip, and automatically biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel. In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the unit biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed. The Quaife differential also controls loss of traction when the drive wheels are on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow or mud, providing the appropriate biased traction needed to overcome these adverse conditions. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs. The Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential's unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. A definite advantage, whether on the track or on the street. The Quaife differential is extremely strong and durable, and since it is gear-operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly and regular replacement. There is no maintenance required to the unit, so you can fit and forget. The Quaife differential is great for street driving or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. Because it behaves like an open differential during ordinary driving, street drivers will have trouble telling it's there until pushing the cars towards its limits. The Quaife differential is proven in everything from SCCA Rallying to drag racing and Formula 1. It provides autocrossers with such an advantage, it has become "required" equipment for a winning effort. Expand your vehicle's limits with the Quaife ATB Helical LSD Differential!" For cars with a welded differential: We can offer a complete Quaife Final Drive Unit for a direct swap. Once in a while we run into a good used final drive unit to offer a Quaife Final Drive Unit at a lower price, please inquire. Most automatics came with a bolted diff, but please check with us first. Retail $1493.50 Sale price $1418.82 Orer here: http://www.hpashop.com/Quaife-LSD-BM...fe-ATB-LSD.htm All 6MT 135i came with a welded diff, but Quaife final drive units are available now for a direct bolt-in replacement. Retail is $2588 plus $1000 refundable core plus $95 in shipping to the 48 States. Man, that price is lookin' awfully nice from a STEPtronic owner's perspective...
Do you guys happen to have a source on the OE fluid that's used in the case? If I were to perform this mod, I'd prefer to use what was in it from BMW.

The mechanics of the LSD will react faster than the e-diff. Also, the nice part is that in instances when a wheel leaves the ground at the track (or otherwise) the e-diff should kick in and compliment the LSD's abilities...

I do! Unfortunately, I need to get wheels and tires first.
What can I say? I like traction!

can you go a little more in detail as to what happens to the electronic diff that is in place .... does it become useless (does the dtc button do anything after installation?) and will this void my warranty???/ will the dealer be able to detect the mod?

LSD cannot damage your car unless you don't know how to drive it and you spin it into a wall. The LSD unit is a completely separate sealed unit from the tranny, suspension, etc. Even if you filled the diff unit with olive oil instead of tranny fluid, the only thing you'd break is the diff itself. It is nothing like engine mods where one mod can effect other components of the engine. The LSD is what the 135i should have gotten from the factory. |

lets talk abot instal costs. Whats the average you think a shop charges. Do you think a dealership like Tischer BMW would do something like this?

I'll be anxious to hear what Harold's estimates are, but a completely random guess would be 3-5 hours for the manual trans car and 6-8 hours for the STEP. I can't imagine why Tischer wouldn't be able to install an LSD either...

Since we all have new cars, and are covered by warranty, and I'm all about keeping my warranty, will this void any part of the warranty?

Since you'd have to replace the whole differential hub and everything instead of just swaping the internals...
