Paint stock rims or get new ones?
I like the look of my 261M wheels, but have been searching for rims for awhile. I really like the CSL reps. Been debating on if i should just paint my rims ($600) or splurge on a new set?

If you aren't looking for lighter rims, and are happy with the style of the current 261's, get them powder coated. Paint is much less durable and will show a lot more wear over time. I got mine done for $45/wheel.

damn, $45/wheel. that sounds like a great deal. I have been quoted $150-$175/wheel and 2 places rec i do not powdercoat stock rims and have them painted instead?

I paid a little over $100/wheel the first set, but the price has dropped since I started doing them. There are lots of local powder coaters here, and I imagine Portland has plenty too, call around, you should be able to find a better rate. Mine are Morton Black Chrome, which requires a liquid clear, and 17", I think my coater charges a little more for 18" wheels and a little less for single stage coatings.
Stock M wheels are powder coated, so I didn't hesitate to recoat mine a second, darker color, and have plenty of track time on them, so the relatively low temps that powder coating requires clearly don't pose any threat to wheel strength. |

Thanks, it's been a great color for track wheels. The photo I attached is with a flash, so they're actually a good bit darker than that in person. Since you're in Portland, call some of the bike builders up there and see if they know of any good, local coaters. I've used Mike DeSalvo in Ashland, but I think Jim Kish, Sascha White at Vanilla and a few others up there probably know a few good people you could use.

I certainly would not spend $600 to paint the wheels when wheeladdicts has CS7s for $900 shipped. Great price for nice new wheels.
