The cost of BMW ownership

We all worry about the unforseen cost of repairs, when that engine light comes on you automatically think shit what now .

Today we had a M6 in with a throttle actuator fault, this is a big dollar repair as there are two actuators and at around $2100 each plus labour, so around $4,700 not good.

Just so you know this is an issue with the V8 M3, V10 M5 and V10 M6

maybe our N54 cars aren't that bad after all

It's not just beemers. The missus had a failure in the electric steering of her 4 yr old Fiat. Lucky Fiat came to the party (it was only just out of warranty) as the parts on a car that cost $20k new totalled near $6k - i.e about what the vehicle was worth.

I remember looking at a used Audi TT a few years ago at a dealer (from memory it was 5-6 years old and had under 80,000km). The sales guy said the car did have some serious engine failure and there was over $20,000 worth of receipts for the repair!!! The guy traded it in after for a cheap car..

Back in 2005, my 1994 E36 blew its differential: One of the half shafts was dangling outside the box.

Total repair cost: $4500 USD.

Our E70 X5's rear differential busted recently too, a whopping $4500AUD repair. Generally the diff supposed to last a lifetime, the quality of BMW is going downhill.

Poor owner, I hope the SMG box doesn't die as that will probably be the next costly thing to replace.

On a side note, that V10 seems to look rather clean.

European cars need European service. Pay to play. Warranty is a wonderful thing.

Yeah except its not always true. My BMW's cost more to run than they were worth for an M car.

My 911 has been vastly cheaper to run and so has the Cayenne.

I wouldn't necessarily say that... I just got a bad diff and unfortunately I was way out of warranty.

That 1994 E36 was the fifth BMW I owned (I'm on my sixth now) over the past 30 years and the first major repair I ever had, so I think that's not too shabby.

I had a look at a boxster out of curiosity cause I remember years ago they used to be nuggets and omg the price for options, $1500 for a TPM, $18,000 for ceramic brakes.

Wife's 2011 e91 320d had timing chain replaced at 30k. Took BMW 2.5 weeks as it was a motor out job. Lucky it was under warranty otherwise we were looking at $3500. Mostly labour.

Yeah. They offer ceramics though, do BMW yet I don't know TBH.

Porsche offers extended warranty for 10 years that covers track use. Good luck with BMW with that. The service and running costs are also a lot cheaper.

My M3 had the subframe fail, tailshaft coupling, alternator, fuel pump go. The engine popped due to a failed oil pump at 1500km that's the stuff I can remember. Doesn't even cover how much more expensive parts are for an M3 than 911 .

My M coupe had the alarm always go off and my 335 had lines in the iDrive display within 5k.

The dealer actually told me the inside dealer joke is BMW stands for "Bring Money With you".

Mercedes are exactly the same with their AMGs.

The only saving grace is people like Peter who help keep the cost of ownership down as the Australian BMW dealers rip you

pity when your car is down in such a bad way, it's not always possible to wait to get the parts

Just got a quote from BMW Techniks Perth for the following for a 2011 135i:

Basic oil service $460, seems expensive dread to think what BMW charges then.

Down pipe and tune $3000!

Their labour rate must be steep. Its liks $130 of oil and a $12 filter for an oil service.

Whilst were on the topic of 'BMW Ownership'... I'd love to hear it straight from the horses mouth guys.

I am seriously contemplating converting over, and buying a 135i.
Bit of back ground, I've had my fair share of Japanese imports all from, R32 GTR, various drift cars from 180sx SR20, 2JZ 180sx, 4DR R32 (with twin cam RB30), and currently driving a 200SX S15 2001 daily.

Im not afraid of a little maintenance and expect it with owning any performance car, yet I really want to hear it from you guys, especially located in Australia how much the servicing and running costs of a N55/N54 x35i car can cost.

btw; I am new here, so hello everyone haha - Name is Wayne.
