You can decline software update!

After searching out and reading a troubling number of posts regarding loss of power/throttle response after receiving the software update asociated with the HPFP recall (SIB 13-09-10 - reprogram DME for improved cold start idle), I decided I definately didn't want it.

My 2009 with PPK and performance exhaust has always run very strong and the thought of it being de-tuned through a software update was worriesome. It seemed worth avoiding if possible. I notified my service advisor in advance via email that I wanted to decline the upgrade. I confirmed that it was clearly excluded on the service order when he wrote it up. So I received:

1. Check and replacement of 3 injectors
2. Replacement of HPFP with 446
3. Rear lamp seal replacement
4. Seat belt tensioner replacement
5. CUSTOMER DECLINES N54 REPROGRAMMING B13 09 10

Picked up the car today and the throttle is just as responsive as before.

Good deal. Personally, I noticed no performance difference after the new pump and software.

+1.. i thought it felt less responsive... then I remembered I took my downpipes off for service. Back on, and neck snapping as ever ~

I think for anyone who wants to decline the SW update - one should inform your SA but also leave a taped note for the service tech to see/read. because sometimes a SA can forget to inform the person who actually works on your car.

Thats good to know. Last time I told them I'd prefer not to have the reprogram, but the SA said it was mandatory. I did notice a difference in response after the update (a negative difference). My only concern with formally declining however, like on your receipt, is that hopefully they do not use this against you with a future fuel issue (HPFP, LPFP, Injectors, etc.). Anyways, good to know that you actually can decline.

FWIW my SA at Tischer told me the HPFP recall flash only overwrites a few small sections of the code and doesn't overwrite any part of Dinan or GIAC tunes. I don't know about the PPK tune.

The only was for sure to know which SW version your car has is to use a BT scan tool and read the SW version file. That is my understanding.

Some have said you can use the "back door menu" of the instrument pannel... but that only shows you the SW version of the instrument pannel, NOT the ECU.

Some have said you can use the secret menu of the radio setup... but I have not found a screen in the radio menu that lists SW version. Only VIN and radio serial numbers.

So... only with a BT tool or with BMW GT1 scan tool - as far as I know.

Had the annual oil change done this week. Along with that came 4 updates:

- HPFP replaced (still had the original HPFP)
- Software update (first update)
- Replaced 4 injectors
- Seatbelt recall

Took a day and a half.

Passenger side rearview mirror has brown spot, new mirror ordered.

The good:

Had a use of a loaner 2011 328i.
I think the throttle response is actually better.

The bad:

Radio station presets were gone and Dial by Name phone book emptied.
