My climate control's got a mind of its own

I searched around for this and couldn't find anything about it here, and I didn't bother pulling out the manual. Is it normal for my climate control to just go on by itself? I mean, it is completely off, and then out of the clear blue sky, it turns itself on, up to the second fan setting, no less.

It's a pretty cool feature if its supposed to work like that, but for some reason I don't think it is....has anyone else noticed this? I've had the car for quite a while now and have driven it plenty of times in the cold and the cc never came on by itself before. Anyone? Thanks

Mine had never done that before since I always keep it on to prevent fogging the windows.. Could it be something to do with auto button?

I suppose that when you say it is completely off, you mean that it is actually turned off and not just off in the auto setting. Because if it is in auto and not running it is not running because you are where you want the car. Two other thoughts ... the e90 has a feature that will auto-cool the vehicle at a specified time. I believe these settings are supposed to default every 24 hours and the standard setting is off. So, I don't know that that's what is going on, but that setting is accessible via iDrive under the "Climate" tab. Not sure about such on non-iDrive cars. And last but not least, could just be a OBC or software issue.

No, I've never even used the auto button. Just out of nowhere, the heat will turn on as if I hit the "fan-up button" and the "snowflake" button will light up (the button in the middle, on the right-most column of buttons on the CC console)

Yeah, it's off so that the LED screen is dark, and like I said the auto button is off. So from that point, it just turns on. The LED screen lights up, and my previous temp settings come up, and the fan comes on at the second level. I didn't think it seemed right...

Well, normally something strange will happen maybe once in every one hundred times, like the iDrive won't boot up properly, or something, and I'll just let it go because it will be fine for the next hundred times....kind of like that.

But this has happened twice already...once on Sunday morning, and just now when I was coming home from the gym. I was all sweaty and had the windows open (even though it's like 22 degrees here ) and I look down and the heat is on! I know for a fact when I pulled out of the parking lot, EVERYTHING on the CC was OFF!

I dunno

Don't know if my E90 does that too.. but is it possible that the car is trying to get you some ventilation to prevent lack of oxygen?

have you checked on the timer section. you can set the car to automatic operations at different times. Check that.

Clarification. The timer feature ventilates, it doesn´t cool unless the outside air is COLD.

I thought I'd bump this up again to give anyone else who might know a chance to read it. This happened again today, and it's getting to be a daily occurrence.

How do you check the timer setting through the iDrive? I couldn't find it in the iDrive screens or in the manual.

Do you think I ought to call the dealer about it? I don't know...if no one here knows what I'm talking about, I've got a feeling the dealer will know even less (the vented slots on the motion sensor for the alarm comes to mind... )

Sounds like a common problem that was on earlier models. Especially the e46 3. "final stage unit"..... Where fan speed changes, or turns on on its own....

I am new here on the forums in fact I just picked up my 330i a few weeks ago(my first BMW at that). I think it has a memory setting that will save the last setting used with that fob key, like the seats and mirrors. Try your other key next time and see if that works.

Hey, welcome to the forums, and congrats on your new car!

The key fob might have something to do with it, actually. I never thought about that, but recently I have been changing them without even thinking. Both fobs would be laying on my table and I'd just pick one up.

But the fact that the CC just turns itself on by itself, like 10 minutes after I start the car while driving is what's throwing me off...
