Exhaust crackles & pops

Hey folks,

Just want to get some opinions on this...

What's your view on having loud crackles & pops from your exhaust, be it on high rpms or low. Do you reckon it sounds good? Or unclassy/tacky/cheap?

I've had friends and colleagues convincing me to go through with an Exhaust mod that'll produce more volume and lead to crackles & pops sounds, but I'm honestly just going back & forth in my head whether it sounds good or not.

The main concern i have is having it crackle loads and it sounds annoying rather than having a classy/sporty deep tone at all times (which my stock with Golf Tee Mod already kinda has)

Cheers

EDIT-------

Here's an example:

A Prius couldn't make a sound that badass if it had a bad injector, a misfire, and an exhaust leak.

I'm a fan of the sound myself, and I think it's very sporty sounding. It's the same type of burble sound that a Porsche with an exhaust makes. Sure it'll sound harsh if you direct mic the tips, but as a bystander, it is a very pleasing sound to a petrolhead. "Quiet" is for non-car people with lawnmower engines, sporty cars make noise.

That video makes it look like your driving upside down. But your in Australia so that explains it. But about the sound..... I don't like loud exhausts but I think it sounds good.
Most here are looking for that sound. My exhaust is still stock and I like it fine but would get the PE in a second if there was an issue with mine.

rodman9 your exhaust sounds pretty darn good to me! N55's sound better than N54's(what I have) bc no secondary cats to muffle that glorious sound of the PE(Performance Exhaust).

I take it you just installed the PE on your N55? Or did you just purchase your car? You must also have the PPK(come standard on the 135iS models)... ?

After you put a few thousand kilometers on the exhaust... it gets a deeper and nicer tone to it.

Here is what my 135i sounds like with a PE and a German sw tune. I do not have a PPK base tune - so my car pops and burbles less. The red MINI behind me was a brand new JCW 2016 model.

BMW's Performance Exhaust with the Performance Power Kit sounds pretty similar to the video you posted. I have them and I love all that popping and crackling. Plus the PPK gives you 20 extra horsepower.

Edit: The video that the OP posted is e36addict's and he says he got the sound from a software update.

yep correct, i also read that came as a result of a software upgrade. I just wanted to use the video as an example to everyone of those "crackles & pops" i was referring to

Heres an example of a 135is with the Performance Exhaust and the Performance Power Kit, and sounds similar to the video that the OP posted. This car has PPK version 2, which is standard on the 135is. It adds some extra cooling hardware that isn't really necessary unless you track and such. This is not my car or video but belongs to another member. You can add these parts to your car.

I have the PE and PPK.

You absolutely want these noises!!!! It ruins my FE because in low speed traffic I will continue lightly accelerating and letting off the gas just to hear it.

The people who don't like it must not like the sound of a Ferrari downshifting either.

I find myself doing the same with MHD+Berk race. Though for me it's more like resting my foot on the gas during decel.

So are the crackles & pops from the first video from a normal software update or from PPK? I have the PPK on my car now (with standard exhaust) and it sounds similar. The car is going in for a software update next week so wondering if this will increase my crackles even more?

Also while we are on the topic anyone know if the software update will wipe my PPK tune and whether it will have to be reinstalled? Dackelone maybe?

When you have the PPK sw it is linked to your VIN... so any sw updates down the road will be based on the PPK sw and not the normal 135i sw. So you should be fine.

Ever since I got my downpipes on, I can't stop accelerating hard and letting off. I also have the PE w/no resonator or secondary cats. I still have the pops too, the sounds only an enthusiast would enjoy!

The pops and gurgles are half the fun! I love having the PPK flash with the JB4. TONS of pops, gurgles, and very loud backfires on demand!

do you have any rasp with your setup? i have the same setup with jb4 and around 1800-2000 rpm sometimes i get the most embarrassing rasp ever since i got rid of the resonator. was fine without cats but once i removed the resonator is when it happened. i have tuned most of it out with the jb4 menu 10,11, and 12 but it still comes sometimes.

Most of these videos don't capture the actual sound of the PE/similar set ups well. The bass seems to be absent and the pops are very 'tinny'. Check out the two below, best examples I have found online that sound similar.

Personally I love the backfires the PE adds. It sounds exotic at WOT, upshift, and it cracks going into the next gear (sounds AGGRESSIVE). At mid range RPM, let of the throttle and it burbles, not cracks, down the rev range. Enough to draw attention, not enough to be obnoxious. PE > Golf tee 300%.

Part 2 has nothing sound related once the music starts though.

I do have a lot of rasp in that same rpm range. I just ordered some resonators to get rid of it.
