I have the standard 'Y' cable for the iPod/iPhone ISB connection on my '13 128i. Has anyone used this with the latest iPhone 5? Obviously, the iPhone 5 uses the new Lightning connector, and requires a special adapter for the old 30 pin connector. Has anyone used the Lightning adapter for their new iPhone 5/iPod, and does it actually work in the standard BMW iPod connection?

Just use the lightningcable instead.
I used my iPhone 5 plus lightning cable(just use it/buy another lightning cable for in-car use) in my former F30 and now in my 1M. Everything works just fine. Just like the iPhone 4 did with the former cable. Cheers Robin |

Unfortunately, that doesn't work on my mine... I've got just the standard (stock) level iPod player on my base model 128i, which requires the BMW supplied 'Y' cable, consisting of combined USB to 30 pin connector and the aux audio plug. Just using an Apple supplied USB cable, either the old 30 pin connector or new Lightning connector, won't work... I think Hyundai also requires its own properity adapter for iOS devices, just like BMW. With that in mind, the only option seems to be the 30 pin to Lightning adapter (only avail thru Apple Store for now) which can be attached to the 30 pin connector side of the BMW 'Y' cable for iOS devices. The big unknown is if this adapter will even work on the BMW exclusive Y cable, since I don't want to shell out 29 bucks for an adapter that may not even work on my car.

I just plug the lightening cable into the USB on the car and done. Everything works great. Turn by turn even pipes through my speakers from google maps. Oddly it doesn't come through from apple maps..

I noticed that SIRI activates through bluetooth, and the new Google maps app also activates and announces directions via bluetooth in my car. The turn by turn never came through with Apple maps on any phone.. but the new google maps app does this. |

This is driving me nuts.
I have an iPhone 5 and a '09 135i. The car Bluetooth and the phone connects fine that way for phone. I can find no combination of cables that permits correct production of music. 1) Original Y cable with 30 pin to Lightning adapter: Pandora plays fine, though I have to use the iPhone to change stations. The standard music does not play correctly; a single album will play with no way to select another. The radio only goes between songs on the album and the other playlists (and albums) when selected give "Empty List." When the iPhone is connected, it won't permit direct control of music. 2) Lightning to USB: No sound at all. 3) 3.5mm to 3.5mm: The sound produced by the iPhone is heard, but only the iPhone controls the music. Nuts. |

Hopefully, BMW will come out with its own Lightning adapter for those us if stuck with the entry level iPod/iPhone audio w/ 'Y' cable... and of course, BMW will charge like $100 for its own special Lightning adapter.
