Autoblog praises the 1-series and rails on the 2-series.

they echo exactly my sentiments. piss poor steering and just a soft car in general! FINALLY the 1-series is getting the credit it deserves! I have a feeling time will look fondly upon the 128 and 135

FYI: I'm not posting this just to bash on the 2-series (although it's a car i really do dislike after driving several), but i am primarily posting this because i feel the 1-series is getting the credit it deserves in reviews these days.

So, has BMW lost its edge? With the 2 Series, we believe so. There's little arguing that this is a more comfortable, refined and, most importantly, livable vehicle than the car it replaces. But the cost of these improvements is steep. The 228i xDrive isn't only less enjoyable; it's less interesting. And for that reason alone, unless you need all-wheel drive on your small coupe, there are better-equipped, more entertaining vehicles that offer the charm and personality that the old 1 Series had in spades.

I believe I saw my first 2-er this morning while biking along the beach. Didn't get a great look, but my first reaction was it looks a bit Asian from the back. Is it available with a stick? Could I get one without iDrive?

They look nice, and to be fair they tested a AWD version saddled with the weaker motor. The M235i would be a better choice.

I briefly considered the M235 as a replacement for my 135 upon lease-end. After a test drive, I looked at the 235 as a lateral transfer rather than an upgrade. Sure it outperforms the 135 is some key ways, but it does so at the expense of soul and personality. My decision was to patiently search for the right 135 to replace my 135.
Done and done. I couldn't be happier with my "new" 135, plus I spent $15k less and now have more power AND character with the addition of a few tasteful and conservative mods.

But they bashed the M steering wheel? I LOVE the fat wheel on my Msport 135. My ex had an E9x 328 when I got my first 135 and her standard BMW wheel felt thin, cheap, and plastic-y compared to my meaty, thick M-sport wheel. To this day, I am hooked on thick steering wheels. Thin ones feel like my mom's 80's Buick.

I'd consider an M2 eventually but they have to address the shitty steering feel...

The 2-Series couldn't be worse than the 3-Series, could it?

I test drove a 328i before I bought my 128i in 2012 (never really considered the 328i, but I got a $1000 promotional discount off my 128i just for the test drive) and I thought it was soft, numb, and bloated... Nothing like my old E36.

Pro's and con's to both cars but the steering is just bad on the 2, when my lease is up I will be buying it instead of getting the 2.

Y'all like the E82/88 weren't soft and was the greatest Bavarian thing. The suspension is just bad. Then, there's the interior that is on the same quality level as Fiat's. And other things. It's like they out more R&D into the M235i than our 135i.

They have done some changes to the F30, steering, suspension-wise, it is supposed to be better than before.

But, I'm still a happy 1Addict and 3Addict.

While I lament the transition to electric steering ( to save what? 1 or 2 mpg?), this bodes well for the long term value of the whole 1 series family, especially the na 128. Articles like this make me want to keep my 1 forever. So damn good with the right suspension mods. If the 1 series is lacking anything, it certainly isn't charm or character.

I don't see where they are bashing the RWD version of the 2 series car. I prefer the 1er myself but surely its (the 2er), not so bad compared to the tragic decline of the e9x to the f3x series cars?

Meh they tested a non sport suspensioned x-drive model against a memory of a rear drive 128i(sport or no sport?). It is pretty well known that the xdrive versions have never had the steering feel of their rwd counterparts. I've driven the rear drive and while the steering was lacking in feel it was anything but imprecise. The car was tossable and felt better set up suspension wise than my 135. I'm hoping the M2 is awesome so maybe some of these less glowing reviews of the 2 series will light a fire under the M division to make sure they get it right.

I have to laugh at this stuff especially the Autoblog review on an odd model few people would buy.

I've owned the 1, 135i, and the 2, M235i. After 80K in the 1, I felt it was getting a bit tired, so I bought a 2. In terms of performance, comfort, and amenities, the two cars are equivalent.

In fact, the only authoritative source of automotive goodness, Consumer Reports, gave the 2 nearly perfect marks in its tests. When the 1 came out, CR was equally enthusiastic.

The 2 does have a huge advantage over the N55 engine. The N55 has a cast crank while the 2 has a forged. Thus those hungry for power will have a better platform to screw around with. Also I believe the 2 will be more reliable than the 1 which has had a lot of mechanical issues.

I'm afraid you are the one out of touch with reality.

If you knew anything about testing and evaluating automotive products, you appreciate CR. You really should to some research to back up your facetious statement.

Pick up CR 2015 annual car issue. In it there is a description or their test facility and their staff of nearly 300 engineers and technicians who conduct tests. There isn't one organization anywhere on the planet that gives consumers valid reliable data on cars but CR.
