Redline uses ester as well so decided to give Motul a go coz I had fantastic results with its engine & diff oil.

Results: slightly smoother & silkier that Redline D6

Hello,

Reading up online about this, ffl-3 (mft-lt 5) appears to be a fully synthetic based fluid. I found this stated here on their website.

pentosin.net › CRP-116_Pento_FFL3

And it would seem the closest replacements would be redline dctf. (Pdk)

I replaced my fluid over the summer with D4 and I was initially impressed with the shifting feel however over the winter the gearbox was definitely less willing to shift. I had 2 mornings which were around 0F where I had to double clutch the box for the first couple of miles. Needless to say if my 1 is around for next winter I think I'm going to try something else.

Just put D6 in mine 2 weeks ago, its so much smoother now. Well worth the 30$ in fluid.

The official word from redline, DCTF is a more suitable substitute for MTF-LT-5 aka Pentosin FFL-3 than either D4 or D6.

thanks for the link and info.. MTL is still available as MTL75W80 however the DCTF may be the way to go as it does indicate it is the direct replacement for BMW MTF-LT-5

Just put in DCTF with new 550i clutch change and differential upgrade. All is meshing very well together.

Just re-read all of these posts and pored over the Redline site again.

D6 ATF is recommended for non M 1 series now.
DCTF is the recommended fluid from redline now for all M diffs from 2002- current.
It has the proper friction modifiers and is also GL-5 rated. gonna pull the trigger on this one
