Does your exhaust have this piece?
Part number 3 in this diagram. RealOEM calls it a "32 Hz Vibration Absorber." I just recently installed a Performance exhaust and when I transferred the bushings from the stock exhaust to the new one, I noticed that this piece was not on the stock one (there is a corresponding place on the PE where it could mount). WTH?

Anyone with a 2010 128i wanna check out their stock exhausts? Also curious if this is meant to be transferred to the Performance exhaust. As I said, there is a place for it, but the Performance exhaust doesn't come with instructions, so who knows. Anyone with a dealer-installed Performance exhaust care to comment? Considering I took delivery of my car about a year ago, I doubt I'll get much love from the dealer if this piece is indeed supposed to be on my car. Looks like I'll be putting in another order with Tischer...kind of annoyed to have to pay $50 for a piece of rubber, but I just have to keep reminding myself that it's a German-engineered, finely crafted piece of precision rubber. |

Just went ahead and ordered these parts. Will post my impressions after install. I have noticed some droning/harshness in the 2000-2500 rpm range and wonder if this will clear it up. Could just be the exhaust breaking in, though, as the sound seems to be changing slightly already (only ~100 miles on it).

This part was not on my wife's 2011 128i Cabrio. The PE is pretty loud, and I do feel a small amount of resonance in the floor, but haven't got 100 miles on the exhaust yet, so time will tell. Overall, pleased with the sound/appearance of the PE, but curious about this "damper".

I ordered it from Tischer BMW (www.getbmwparts.com). I didn't pay any taxes, but it was shipped to a US military address.

You probably have to pay what ever your country's duty tax is. Ask you local customs office or post office. Here in Germany they have a 19% MwSt tax. But when I would order stuff... and the German Zoll(customs) would get to the package first... I would have to pay about 32% of the value of the goods(invoice). The Germans charge not only that 19% tax but some other shipping taxes too! It is total nuts. That was before I started working with the US Army. Now everything goes to my APO and I am tax exempt. IF you live in the EU and buy from another EU country... I think you are ok tax/customs wise. |

Just got this vibration absorber fitted to my exhaust today. Could be the placebo effect, but I really do feel like it dialed out a bit of harshness in the exhaust note at certain RPM's. Between this and the breaking in (400+ miles so far) the exhaust is sounding really nice lately. Makes rev-matching an even nicer treat, and gives the 128i some presence IMO.

I just got the PE last week and it is somewhat loud and droning even under very light acceleration @ around 2,500rpm. I hope it just needs breaking in. My car also did not have the damper and I'm considering ordering it.

Don't worry - it is kinda loud for a few weeks, but it mellows out. I don't think the damper is going to fix anything. Also, check and make sure your clamp is tightened correctly and there are no leaks around it.

The pipes join up very nicely at the cut, the tips are aligned nicely, and the clamp is very tight. Oddly enough the car is louder inside with the windows closed.
I'll hold off on the damper for a while and see if the sound gets better. |

It's all harmonics...it should mellow out eventually. Not sure what actually takes place, but there is a definite difference after a few thousand miles.

Just bringing up this old thread as it discusses some droning under acceleration around 2500rpm. I notice this as well. I don't know if my original exhaust had that rubber piece and was transferred over as I had an exhaust shop put in the Performance Exhaust.
I went back to the exhaust shop today and they are telling me to add a "J" pipe to eliminate Helmholtz resonance. I've done some research and it looks like there is a lot of success with other car communities with this. I'm going to get it done tomorrow but just putting this out there and it would be good to hear if anyone has done this and achieved success. |
