M1 anyone?

With news of the M1 firming up, anyone considering an upgrade? What about the M3 owners thinking of switching to the smaller car?

For me that the M1 would solve a problem needing to have three cars in the garage - my wife loves her little 125i, I love my 135i, but we would need a family car as having no four door I found is a little bit inconvenient at times. So, having only a M1 and may be a X5 or 5erGT would definitely better than having two coupes plus a 4wd, as the M1 is DCT which means my wife can drive that car during weekdays, and I will take it over on the weekends .

Mate I would love an M1 but my estimate is it will cost between a 335i and an M3, so 130-150k. After all, it is an M car.

Also, I can't imagine it coming out anytime too soon here in Australia. If I get a decent trade in deal I will consider it, but as it is, I'm the envy of all my mates, a couple in particular who are genuine car enthusiasts. Sometimes I can't believe I got my hands on the 135i. One of the main reasons why I bought this car in the first place was because I thought it was a such a bang-for-buck performance car and it was going to be my little project as I'd pump mods into it over the years.

I think I'll just have to wait and see what comes of the M1 and make my decision. No doubt, the M1 envy will always be there though. Maybe it's time for JB3 2.0 to make myself feel better!!

IMO you would be better off with a 12 month old M3 Sedan for similar ca$h. It will be too exy, and I reckon will take a bath on the used car front (like all Ms, come to think about it all cars )

If the M1 does ever come into existence I would personally prefer it over the M3, especially a used one. The M1 will be a huge hit and I can see many potential M3 switching to the M1 and many M3 owners trading into an M1. It will also be the first ever M 1 series. The E82 is very reminiscent of the E36 but it's lacking an M variant and the M1 will fill that void noicely. I'm pretty sure it will be the easiest to drive on the track as well as it will still have the dynamics of an M car but be the most light-weight and nimble in BMW's lineup.

For the market interested in a more compact M car, this is excellent. But if it is going to have an M badge, it better be good...

I would not be interested in an M3 sedan, if I wanted a family car I wouldn't have bought the 1. M3 coupe is a little big, but love it. When the time comes to replace the 135, I would look into the M1. I just feel that after a few years with this I wouldn't want the same shape again and look into something else in that rice bracket.

I'll believe it when I see it.... I can't see it being in the current iteration of the 1 series, the new shape isn't really too far away.

IF it had that glorious V8 in it then I would seriously consider it. Even a slightly detuned version. But I doubt very much BMW would do this. For me an M-car has to have a characterful, exciting, sweet-sounding engine and I am afraid the N54/N55 just doesnt have what it takes in my book.

To me, I don't really mind the Turbo six, as M cars is always about dynamics. Sure it's great to have a high reving engine like the M3 V8, but I don't think it's what a M is all about.

Remember all those people saying the M3 should be a straight 6 when they switch to a V8? I think it should have whatever engine it can to deliver M dynamics, and I know having a V8 is going to stuff up the weight ratio.

Apart from the visual cues, like flared arches, domed hood, quad pipes and side sills; I think it is more important to make sure the M1 have direct throttle, non-RFT, right suspension geometry, and M-Diff. On top of that, with weight reduction expected from lightweight material that shifts centre of gravity lower, and better torque and power; it is not only going to be faster off the line, it would also be much quicker round a track.

From the other thread, it looks like there is a BMW employee on the forum as he used 'we' to clarify a few things that seems to confirm the M1, and it makes marketing sense.

The next M for the 1 won't be very soon, and remember the M3 CSL came very late in the product cycle too.

The expected launch date is mid 2011, that makes a lot of sense as the current 135i owners would be shopping for the next car, and many 135i owners would have bought the M1 if it was available.

Consider the suspension, M-diff, steering rack and DCT would be bolt on from the M3, it really only needs a new body kit, and a better tuned N55 to have it uprated the power.

I guess it's all still speculative until official announcement, but it certainly pointing towards the highly likely.

I wouldn't swap my M3 for an M1 - but then I drive my M3 everday and haul three kids to school and back. The M3 has a bigger cabin, more practicality in E90 mode and has more boot space. If you drive on the track everyday and a sub-5 second 0-100 means you get to work a bit quicker then great, a quicker M1 is the way to go. I lived with a 135i everyday and unfortunately it didn't work for me - somehow an M1 wouldn't make it any different.

Well the engine of course is not the only thing but to me it is one of the essentials of a proper M car. The engine has to be unique in some regard...look at the previous M's crazy sixer, the M3's F1-inspired V8, the M5's raucous V10...its gotta have something very special under the bonnet to be an M surely?

I guess because you can turn up more boost easily and makes it go faster makes it less crazy? I guess we'll have to wait and see. If there's even more torque, and max power extends to 6 or 7k - that would be something .

Still, 10% increase in power, 10% reduction in weight makes this car 20% better, at least.

isn't the M3 V8 engine pretty much the same weight as the outgoing 3.2L I6? can't remember where i heard that but thought i did..

and the bottom stuff is a given for a M-car!

for me, personally.. i'd prefer a high revving V8 M3 over a hypo turbo inline 6... but can't comment until the car is released and i've wrangled a test drive

TBH i doubt it'd be called the M1 (i may be wrong), just given the history of that badge.
Plus going by the details in the linked threads, the engine sounds very similar to the 335bhp one being offered in the Z4 sDrive35is, which if true to BMW naming these days would probably wind up being sold as the 135is.

Who cares about the "M1" really. Anyone with a chip can already have more power than this anyway. The other day I accidentally put my procede into valet mode (stock) and I thought something was wrong with my car! Where had all my power gone

The only thing that would interest me would be lighter weight, if that was possible.

I'm actually thinking of changing my 135i for a Lotus as I really want something lighter and I'd be seriously compromising the purpose of this car to reduce the weight (eg stripping the interior etc).
