What's This in the Glovebox?

Still exploring my 2011 vert. On the left side of the glovebox, next to the strut, there's something molded-in. Looks like it's there for some purpose, but can't imagine what. I know BMW used to offer a rechargeable flashlight in the glovebox of some models - did this have something to do with that?

I'm using it as a pen holder.

Mine does not have that either, but there is a similar pocket in the "roof" of my glove-box in the upper right.

Do you have idrive? My 2011 coupe has a usb port in the upper right on the "roof" of the glovebox. I was told that his how I wold download songs to the hard drive. To the OP, I also do not have anything that looks like the pic.

I have idrive in my 2008 but it's the older version (no hard drive access for downloading).

I think that the thing that the OP is showing is to hold the flashlight that we don't get.

Here are some BMW flashlights. Would have to be one of the smaller ones to fit in that slot. But I'll have to check it out again later - I'm not sure any of them would fit in there.

That is the socket for the flashlight. I have a micro maglight that fits exactly in there.

Is it the switch to put it in valet mode?

then you lock your glove box and give the valet just the fob (you keep the key)

You know I looked at my glove box tonight. Mine doesn't have that opening/holder! It is all flat there. So I guess BMW changed it on the newer models. Maybe I should take a picture & post it. ?

I think it is different because his (and mine) is a convertible. WHY it is different, I do not know. I am working and can not go out to get the manual now to see if it says.

Thanks! But that's one expensive small flashlight. $32 at getbmwparts.com, which is the cheapest price I see.

I prefer this: VW rechargeable cigarette lighter flashlight
