i think you already saw the german video (100-260 with a 330i) in the video section? i am driving every two weeks 1000 kms on german highways, so i think the 320d will reach his top speed a LOT of time.
But i have to be carrefull, i alreay have a "problems" somes weeks ago on the A1 with a X5.....32 km/h over speedlimit....

I hear you, for germans living in-around major metro areas no speed limit is a myth, as the speed atround major centres is controlled.

For my info is the limit still 120 or is it 130 Km/h ? I forgot.

I have done 165 in an E 55
And just over 130 in my 325

there is now in Germany a lot of "activ" speed limits, depending on traffics activities. sometimes 120, 100, 80 kms/h.

Nevertheless i drive 400 kms on german high ways (medium traffics) at 148 km/h mean speed with a A3 (top speed 210 ) and i were never more than 10 kms/h over speed limits if there was speed limit..the most problems in Germany are the highways with road work (speed limit 60 kms/h....sometimes during 1-2 even 10 kms :mad: )

Limits are usually in place around constructions sites, interchanges, areas with a lot of on/off ramps, etc. These range between 80 and 120km/h. Some particularily hazardous sections also have speed limits. Variable speed limits (indicated by electronic signs above the road) are also used according to traffic flow/volume and weather conditions.

Otherwise, when there is no speed limit, there is a recommended speed of 130km/h.

Just as an example, I was in Munich over the weekend and on the 200km stretch of the A8 between Stuttgart and Munich, the first 50km or so to Ulm is "unlimited" (but during heavy traffic, don't expect to go more than 140km/h). Otherwise it's 80km/h over/around the mountains and constructions sites, and 120km/h elsewhere. Even so, myself and many others were driving above that limit. The way there was pretty bad and I didn't go above 130km/h. But on the way back I was on 140km/h - 160km/h and took it up to 190km/h on the unlimited section.

I'm not too familiar with the Autobahns up north, but I've noticed that down here in the south driving above 160km/h on the 2 lane stretches and 200km/h on the 3 lane stretches is pretty pointless. That's from a time/consumption perspective. While it is sometimes possible to reach the top speed, it's much more relaxing and much better on consumption to drive between those speeds.

I got up to 120 MPH a couple weeks ago on the back road to Vegas. Most of that road is nowhere near smooth enough to go that fast, but there's a certain stretch that begs to be driven fast. I had no choice but to comply.

the fastest ive done on any car was 145mph in my b18c worked delsol. I did it on the nj turnpike from exit 10 to exit 12. I passed inbetween two cars at 135mph and that was the craziest thing ive ever done. Now im an old 22yr old and only hit 100 in my e90!

got it up to about 105-110mph on my cruise to orlando a while ago at like 2am on the turnpike. it feels way too safe. going like 80 you feel like you're doing 40.

MY classical WE trip is from north Germany to Belgian.

South part of HH to Bremen is during 30km-40 km in fact a 90 km/h high way because of truck traffics with the port. then crossing Bremen is a pitty because there is a new 3 lanes Highway, but mostly with electronic speed limit 120 even 100 (and a LOT of camera). still didn't understand why? no so much traffics, no big curve??

After to Duisburg Essen, at Friday evening depending of your departure time, it could be quick, and then direction NL, much less traffics 2or 3 lanes, a few road work...and a lot of kick-down are possible.
when i am driving Sunday evening, when the truck aren't yet back on the road after the WE, i think that 170-180 km/h on 2 lanes is still relaxing, because no trucks=a few car going on the left lane by 130km/h.
But as you said, high speed travels are never relaxing.

About consumption, with a diesel it is still acceptable i think,
for example on this WE-trip, with a 2.0 TDI (140 ps) i consumpt 8.2L (mean speed about 145 as said), with a X5 (3.0d) it was about 11L (but lower mean speed).
