I went drag racing yesterday...I'm hooked
I decided to run my 09 135i 6mt at the 1/4 mile track yesterday and Now I am hooked.
I went there with a goal of running 13.8 @ 102mph, Before I ran I watched several others go so I could try and get an idea of track conditions, most street cars were running mid to high 14s (05+ mustangs and LT1 vehicles) so I was thinking no way in hell I would make my goal... First run was against a 08+ Hemi challenger I ran a 13.749102.88mph, I lost by a tenth to the challenger, damn close race and my only loss of the day. I was solid 13.7s 102 all day long, 60ft was 2.2 for 2 of the 5 runs, the rest of the time it was 2.1s. Kill list: 05+ Mustang GT LT1 Camaro 2002 trans am ws6 LS1 (damn close race! He ran a 13.5 to my 13.7, but I got him at the light and won by 0.1694 seconds lol) 1994 mustang cobra 5.0, 4.10 gears, headers, cobra intake, GT40 heads, x pipe exhaust, under drive pullies and a couple other misc mods. Needless to say I am hooked, but I look at some of the stock times here and I seem to be slow. I know if I can get the 60ft down to 2.0 that will help. I think I am due for carbon cleaning as it has 70k miles and has never been done. Any other suggestions? I am planning to use the stock 18 inch wheels for Drag radials, what size can I run in the back and where do I find them?

When you cut a sub 2 second 60' this car will put you in the low low 13s with similar trap speeds.

I went last year and ran a 13.5. That's with wet tires, 50 degree temps and DCT so my start was terrible. I'm more of a road course guy but have to admit I had a blast.

What tires are you running now? If you're on stock power levels a 245 or 255 rear tire will be fine. Nittos are awesome tires and give good lateral grip. Tirerack.com gives some good deals on tires and you get a install discount if you go to a store their website says is a authorized tire installer and let that store know.
My first time down the strip in my car gave me a stupid 14 something run. Then I remembered to lower my PSI (on the rear tires), launched a bit better and I was running 13.7-13.8 all day with a best of 13.5 and 105 trap speed. These cars can run low 13s stock with a good driver, us average people get what you and I ran. You've never drag raced before? Just some helpful tips for you here: *For ever 100 lbs or 10 lbs of rotating mass lost, you shed .1 off your E.T. (elapsed time) *For street tires most rear PSI is good between 20-22, but every tire reacts different. People tend to start around 25 and making a couple runs then lowering it 1 PSI from there to find the optimal PSI for the tire. *People also tend to fill the front tires with a lot of PSI, like near the max PSI rating. Only for the fact of less rolling resistance but thats for hardcore drag racers. *Race with 1/4 or less of fuel. Enough to get you to the gas station after racing. Less weight and I believe 1 gal of fuel weighs 8 lbs. *Learn your car and practice, practice, practice on your launches. *Take all items not needed in your car out to help save weight. |

Those are good tires too but you might have to call Tire Rack or go to a local store like Discount tire and see if they can order them for you.
Honestly if you want a true DR for this car, then Hoosier or Mickey Thompsons should be what you really want. And you might need to get a 17" wheel or smaller too for the rear. |

I looked in a bunch of places for the Nittos in 18" and I really only found them in 17". Let me make some calls today and I will find you either a similar/better tire in 18" or let you know what an alternative could be.

Sounds like you had a great time. I've only been out a few times as well but you improve a lot with practice.
