Oil cooler?

Anyone ever try this oil cooler from B&M? I'm thinking about it as an upgrade.

Where do you plan on putting it? I don't think it will fit in the stock oil cooler location (i.e. in front of the wheel). It is too deep. You only have about 2" of space to work with. Go with something proven. And I highly recommend using custom made hoses with professionally crimped fittings (not the reuseable style fittings sold with many kits).

Stock location. There is more then 2 inches in there. This is a dinan oil cooler which takes up more then 2 inches.

I'm all about trying something new. I happen to have an ER oil cooler and have done the install a few times (hence my original comment about the reuseable hose fittings). What's hard to tell from the Dinan photo and the photos on ER's website is how the bumper cover fits over the oil cooler/shroud. The outer edge of the ER oil cooler is exactly 2" deep and it's a tight fit between the bumper cover and wheel well. In fact you have to cut the fender liner so the back of the oil cooler housing pokes into the wheel well by about 1/2" on the outer edge. For this reason, the fan must be put in front of the oil cooler. The second issue is that both the Dinan and ER shrouds drop down at an angle of between 15 and 20 degrees to clear the headlight support. I'd be concerned the fan would not clear the headlight support. The third issue is the angle that the bumper cover transitions from the edge to the center of the car. In your picture, under the oil cooler, look at the bottom of the the shroud... That's you approximate clearance. In my mind, the bumper cover will not fit over the fan. Good luck.


Oh, one more thing about the Dinan picture. The top part of the shroud angles down, and the outter edge angles toward the center of the car. As a result, the picture creates an optical illusion that it angles down at 45 degrees. It's much steeper than it appears.

I'm very confident I will work this all out. Then have a larger oil cooler of about 34% and fan driven.. I'll keep you guys up to date. the cooler will be here mid next week and the pre-made -10 hose should follow shortly after that. I'm a mechanical design engineer by trade so, I have the skill..

You should check out MAP's new oil cooler set up. It mounts in a different location than everything else on the market so I'm interested in the results.

That setup has a big drawback, it blocks airflow to the cooling system which is borderline as it is.

AR design has essentially the same setup for their kit. While it obviously does block airflow, I do wonder how much of a difference it actually makes? After all, most of the top mount turbo kits stick the air intake cone behind the right headlight. Not much airflow there!

Does the ER oil cooler shroud delete the inner portion of the oem vent that directs into the wheel well? I'm looking to fabricate brake cooling ducts this winter and I'm wondering if an upgraded oil cooler from ER or Dinan would be compatible with such a mod

I have a similar setup on my 135i as the MAP performance setup that I put together from a Ar Design kit I had. I only upgraded to -10AN lines and fabbed a mount for the cooler inside the grills which is a Setrab. My lines to the cooler are connected to the top of the oil Filter housing. Similar to the way Berk Technology ran their setup.

I have not had no issues with blocking airflow nor temperature issues since installing it and on track my oil (4 ticks from center) and water temps (180-200F) have been fine. You do have to do some cutting and some imagination to get it on there. My car is a daily and my track car for my nurburgring and Spa Francochamps track days.

Yes, the ER shroud fills the whole front opening, so the OE "brake duct" must be removed. That being said, if you wanted to fabricate a true brake duct (with a hose, backing plate, etc.), there is a flat area on the face of the shroud that could be cut open with a hole saw to accept an air inlet/hose fitting.

I had Harold at HP Autosport install the ER oil cooler, and my car runs about 10 degrees F cooler. If you contact him, he might have some good advice for you.

I say that because Engineers are always my worst customers. I also race on a Chump team. Four Engineers and me. Makes me want to bash my head against a wall most of the time.
