Sounds like fun! I'm just bought my first 1 series with autox in mind after spending a day at the BMW performance center driving the new x3 against all it's competition. Thanks for all the advice!

I'm using Hankook Ventus V12's, same as the OP. I originally bought these to go on my F14's as a street performance tire. At the time, I never imagined I would be doing HPDE's. For the street, these tires are great, and at a great price. For the track, the Star Specs would absolutely be worth the $300 premium. The RE11's were almost $500 more than the V12's!
Here's 2 pictures each of my front tires. Some of the chunks look to be all the way to the belt... My disclaimer for these is that I was told the track is very abrasive, and temperatures were in the 40's. |

Stock heigt + Camber plates + rolled fenders. Wheels are 17 x 8.5 et 40. I test fitted 255s and they fit. I am buying 265s because I am cheap SOB and they are cheaper than 255s Wheels and tires have not been ordered yet so wait for pictures with tires on next spring.

After my first weekend (8 sessions) at Mid-Ohio, the tires held up great, and looked great, absolutely no concerns.
The left front tire looked like that after two runs at Putnam. I switched the tires to the opposite sides, and did 6 more runs. At the end of the weekend, both sides look like this. So my first two runs ever at the track, I slaughtered them, and the remaining 6 runs I was able to 'preserve' them so I got 6 runs out of them before they looked like that. I mostly blame my inexperience and the cold temps. Obviously the tires aren't meant to HPDE, but they would be fine for street and casual autocross. |
