I am deciding among the Conti DW, PSS, and StarSpec for 18 inch OEM.

Does eanyone know what brand has the tread that looks like this: [//////] <-- tire on its side. It starts with V...

How does one go about making a custom intake manifold?
I'm thinking a spare Manifold can be cut up... merged with e46 M3 or something custom and ugly

Can anybody confirm how the airflow goes in our intake:
- Air box to throtle body, which sits lot in the intake. Why does it go down low from airbox?

- From the Throttle body, air moves up into the DISA/ non DISA acutators
- From DISA it moves into the air inlets for the engine.

Thoughts on Custom:
Take non DISA 128i becuase it has no actuator motors & only one sensor:
128i http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...56&hg=11&fg=40
130i http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...56&hg=11&fg=40
See if Throttle body can be moved
Cut up to from the very least after the throttle body merge with e46 M3 or custom box

I want the fronts the same size as the backs so I can rotate. Not for serious track duty but just for daily driving. My fronts have 5mm tread left but the back are worn out, 2mm left. I also want to reduce the understeer on the track. 225/45/17 will fit on my 7 inch wide front wheels according to tire rack so that is my plan for size, 4 tires all the same size but on 7 inch wide rims on front and 7.5 inch rims on back.

The tires I am considering are the Continental Extreme Contact DW and DWS and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (not PS2 like I said earlier). Tire racks ratings are 8.6, 8.4, and 9.2. Tread wear are 340, 540, and 300. Cost is $516, $500, and $708 (for a set of 4 without shipping). I think any of these will be significantly better than my run flats. The high treadwear of the DWS is really tempting. I don't really need the all weather capability but once a year it might be handy (but I have a SUV). The Contis are obviously a bargain for a highly rated tire and the owners say good things about them. But the PSS is all around a better tire and beats the Contis in every way except on snow versus the DWS. I should probably just not cheap out (again) and get the PSS. (I don't consider the 128i a "cheap out", I got what I wanted.)

Jim
Get the super sports. They're simply the best overall Performance street tire ever made.

Would you recommend them for an 18" oem staggered set up?

Are there other options not listed here?

Vredestein.

Long tread life, worse in every other regard like the Contis than the PSSs.

Hmm I hear popping sounds out of my exhaust ! Only thing now is how to record it?

Its mostly if I keep it in first gear, accelerate, and let it decelerate naturally in first gear. It kinda decelerates so fast that it produces a nice pop. That, or the summer heat is going to my head ^_^. It does it in other gears as well.

I don't think I've recorded the sound of my injen intake + exhaust before from a standstill. I normally drive my car from home to school. If I did it at home, my neighbors would probably complain. Maybe I will go find a nice parking lot somewhere

This question might sound stupid, but have you guys ever wondered what your exhaust REALLY sounds like?

Of course, I know what my exhaust sounds like because I drive my car everyday, but that is from the inside or even with the windows down! My dad drove our family in my car the other day, and I got to sit in the back seat. The exhaust sounded different as I guess I am closer to it.

It got me wondering what my car sounds like to cars besides or behind me everyday when I drive. Hopefully they like it and don't find it annoying xD

Theres a guy in the uk, mainly on babybmw, that has a full custom ITB setup but it has to run on an aftermarket ecu - mad sound and power though lol

Problem with it is the valvetronic system, have to lock it to full lift and get something to properly control the new intake system/ throttle bodies

Kinda curious what you guys think about intakes? Like the injen intake, or AFE.

The people on the 3 series forums HATE HATE HATE THEM.
They say a lot of things like heat soak, power loss, etc.

Personally, I haven't felt anything on this from my 128i, with or without exhaust. The injen intake was my first mod on my car. While I am aware of the placebo effect, to me it did feel to help out in the lower end, and when I floor it the power goes through the range, doesn't drop off like it normally does. I did not feel a HUGE significant change, as if a miracle happened.

(Dyno is from another 128i user here)

I don't really understand heatsoak. No matter what car I drive, my 128i or my parents non-modified cars, in the summer the cars feels slower. Its a combination of heat and using A/C full blast.

Secondly, engine heat affects everything. The stock air box is just a box of plastic. Plastic heats up too,and at lower temperature then metal. The injen intake comes with a heat shield and the OEM ducting is used to push air from the kidney grilles to the intake.

So, I don't really understand the arguments. If someone wants to explain more please do because I am a total noob.

Maybe its because I only drive 15 minutes everyday, so I don't feel the effect of heat soaking. I got home today and touched my intake. Wasn't hot at all.

I haven't had any problems and I am happy with it so thats all that matters to me I guess .

No need for full kit, just use rubbling alcohol And shake paint really well for metalic to blend.
I have Dr. colorchip too, but only think it's good for tiny dots like sand, otherwise if it's too deep or w.e. then forget it.

Also their WET method is awesome. Just do 2-3 layers over deep chips over 2 days.
And let paint cure for 2 hours before you start removing the smears near the paint chip, and a day for the actual chip.

when using blob on actual chip, I think pre treating with finger the chip is best. After a minute u can then treat the card and cloth and attack the blob of the touch up. Try to do one good motion to get rid of 60% of blob, then slow down.

Get your family member to video you in your car.
That sound is addicting, usually in low gear or tunnels, parking underground.
its due to no resonator.
I will video my car soon.

my 128i got some love today.
Took delivery of Msport sides, painted and a sway bar kit e93.
Msport sides and pre LCI front should be interesting and the line should flow into 128i rear bumper line quite well.

I will post up in the photo thread as a log over the weekend. I washed and clayed the sides, they were used. Need to repair paint chips and then mount it and have my car go in for a detail.

Very excited.

Hi everyone,

Just bought a 2012 bmw 128i - standard suspension (non-sport). Just wondering if anyone has noticed that the 2012 128i's front end seems to have a higher ground clearance than the 2011? I know it's been redesigned since last year- air curtains and fog lights most notably- but I'm not sure how much higher the front end sits than previous years or why, any thoughts?

Also, I've read some reviews about the sport package's sport suspension online and it seems to be a pretty common point of dissatisfaction on the 1 series because of the everyday harsh ride. Does anyone out there actually prefer the standard suspension on these more petite chassis? Any educated thoughts or experience with the matter? Thanks guys!

I usually notice that characteristic on all non sport BMW, the front wheel well has quite some room. The Harsh ride comes not really from suspension but from the Run Flat tires, and the addition of 18Inch wheels for Sport package. Many threads here talk about night and day comfort differences once they go away from Run flats in 18inch size. In any case, I cant comment on the non spot suspension, but if you feel you have too much body roll, there are ways to reduce it using e9x m3/BMW 1m parts like sway bars and other bushings.
