Sapphire VS Jet......Who wins?
I'm a flip flopper.
I started my order with Sapphire and changed to Jet. Now I'm told that Jet is the WORST WORST color to keep clean. Then I'm told that Sapphire looks "dusty" even when it's clean. I intend to keep this car garaged and very clean (and yes I'm still going to drive it...haha)...no automated car washes...and I'm going to try the Zaino or other products mentioned on the forums. WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE??? Sapphire or Jet??

I actually had a different problem, Titanium or Sapp black. The main reason i didn't get Jet (and its a great deep black color) is because i had that on my e46 and wanted something different, that's all.
I saw Black Sapphire on a 545i yesterday and it looked awesome. Not as deep as the Jet Black, but a little lighter and shinier. I guess that's what the metallic paint does for it. Go to a dealer and check out both, then make up your mind. At the end of the day, you will be driving it so you need to make sure you are happy with it. They are both great shades of black. |

I prefer the jet black. There's no additional charge for non-metallic paint so it's also a good way to save some money if you're on the fence with this decision.

If choosing between the blacks, I would probably go with the Jet, because of two reasons: 1) cost savings, 2) the color would be easier to match than the metallic version by any 3rd party source (repair shop, accessory kit, etc.).
They both look good. Real good. |

This issue is PURELY on the buyer..If you're like me, and Zaino is your life, Then Sapphire is an absolute MUST..If you use automated car washes, and washing your car is something you do because "its dirty"..get the jet..Jet is a beautiful deep black, but Sapphire with a couple coats of Z-5, and a thin layer of Z-6 is enough to make your eyes water...

Thanks for the input everyone. I went to a dealer here today....it was very warm with bright sun. I got a good look at many of the E90 colors. The Spark Graphite throws a lot of "purple" in very bright sun. The Sapphire didn't do it for me after seeing 2 E60s side by side (one Sapp one Jet) The Jet is just darker...like ink. The Sapphire put a lot of "glow" on the surface and that did some weird reflective tricks....and caused the color to lighten to a charcoal. Arctic was it's usual schizophrenic self....half the car is blue and the other half grey/green. Still too soft and non-agressive for me.....but a cool color. I think Arctic would look great on the 6er.
I still think that the color selection for the intro production is not BMW's greatest effort. But I'm staying with Jet.

Good choice..I just realized where you were..That was actually half my argument..I live in the UK where there is no sun, which is why the Met was beneficial here....
Who cares anyway! Youre driving an E90!! :rocks: |

I love Jet black, but man is it difficult to maintain, especially BMW JB.
I would spend at least twice the amount of time cleaning my JB Mini compared to my Silver Gray 5 series. Of course when both are clean, there's no comparison, the black looks the sharpest. I just don't have the time each week to maintain a JB car to the level that I prefer. |

Good call
Marcus330i:
Good choice. Tough decision. I have not owned a black sapphire car, but I've stared at it and from what I've seen and heard, you're right. It's very pretty, striking, but in the sun it seems to change to charcoal and several other colors. This is very cool, unless you just love ink black (great description for jet black btw). I love black, pure and simple. To me it is THE BMW color. I think BMW owns black and that probably sounds nuts, but somehow their past designs almost seem like they were designed from black on up. I'm sure you'll love your jet black. Drive fast. sparky |

I currently own a black sapphire. Its a nice color but my next is going to be a jet black. To me, I find that jet black is much more classy and since they are both black anyway and the jet cost less, jet black is the next choice. Don't get me wrong, sapphire is a good color but I just find it not worth the cash for me if I like black in general.

I was originally going for Sapphire Black, but ended up sticking with safe TiAg.
But to answer your question, I would have gone with Sapphire Black (is this how one spells it? ) purely because I prefer metallic colours to solid ones. Whichever black you go with it's going to look awesome anyway. |
