NA usually wins in throttle response it's just the way it works. Most of it due to the software revisions they put on these cars since they were new to help with other issues with the N54 and surely carried over to the N55. A tune of almost any choice will put the response back to where it should be of very minimal turbo lag and nearly instant power but it's definitely not as smooth as an NA motor. The OP either doesn't have the turbo bug yet or never will. Good for him will to be satisfied with a "smoother" more reliable, less costly version of a great car than many others. That being said the Mini must not be an automatic cause I've never experienced more lag in any other car in my life. That includes the auto N/A or Turbo Mini's. Almost bought one for my gf but decided a less powerful Mazda3 was a safer alternative that at least she could get out of peoples way when she floored it.

Dude go kick rocks. Those of us who own a 128i still own it for a reason, because we love it. I don't find the 135i superior in any way. Faster, yes, superior, no. I drove a n55 vert with the stck and I know what the OP is talking about. I couldn't tell a difference in the two until hyway speeds. The 135i will climb faster from 30+ mph! and that's due to the 70 extra hp. Either car has numb throttle lag. Both get about the same gas mileage if driven sensibly, and both cars get the same factory options. So it is all a matter of personal taste.

Buy what suits you and enjoy it.

i think OBJECTIVELY speaking the 135 really is a more performance oriented 1er......just like the 1M is an even more performance oriented version of the 135. The facts and equipment don't lie and the 135 is properly fast with big fat brakes.....with the ability outgun cars with much more power.

SUBJECTIVELY speaking is a whole other matter altogether. 128 owners love the simplicity of their cars and the old school N/A engine-----and i think 135 owners should really respect that....i know i do. Lighter weight and a more simple driving experience offers enjoyment in different ways.

So, as a final verdict on this thread before it gets out of hand: 128 owners should respect the 135 for its capabilities, power, and kicked-up performance. 135 owners should respect the 128 for its N/A engine, lighter weight, and simpler back-to-basics approach of driving.

We are all 1er owners....whether it's a 118 or a 1M. So there's no need to be inflammatory here.

I drove both, bought the 128. Not really a cost or reliability thing, its power/handling balance suited me. The 135 was a hoot, but the power was not a big deal for me. For many years my power deal has been on two wheels, and bikes make most any car seem less than powerful.
I'm with 128Convertibleguy....except I'm still loving my two wheels! Can't wait until winters over.
It's been a few years since I've owned a BMW and first time on a BMW forum...mostly great owners here with lots of advice but some are so sensitive Actually, its the same in any forum be it Glock vs 1911's, Harley's vs the rest, Windows vs Mac, etc.

I agree with IEDI we are all 1er owners and we all lover our cars. Every model of the 1 is a pretty amazing machine, and we should definitely all respect each other and our choice in which one of the amazing 1 levels we chose. I personally am a 128i owner. Do I love the 135i and the 1M, yep you bet. When they had a 1M in my dealer showroom I stood there for about 20 minutes drooling over it. The turbo cars just weren't the right choice for me though. I commute 35 miles each way to work and back, and a lot of that tends to be in bumper to bumper traffic. So gas millage while still having a fun quick car was important to me. Would having the turbo power be fun, you bet, but with the driving I do I would probably never get to use it, and it would just be more thirsty. So the 128 was the right fit for me. I think we all know what the right fit for each of us is depending on the driving we do, and should all respect that. So lets keep out 1er community strong and respectful!

Bottom end the 128 gets to 30mph in about 2.0 seconds the 135 in about 1.7. In other words from a stop light its all over before you get to the other side of the intersection.

That being said the 128 is a great car if you are buying it for the right reasons. Performs much like my old ZHP which was a fun car to drive.
