Lutz Performance Presents Victor's 2001 S54 ZM3 AA HKS Level 1.5 Project!

Hey guys another project we have in the shop is Victor's 2001 S54 ZM3 Roadster. Victor came by the shop a couple months ago interested in getting a 6 speed swap completed and also wanting some more power. So with that in mind I sat down and created a project that would fit everything he was asking for and maybe even a little more!

Completed already on this car is a 5-6 speed swap, as many of you know the S54 ZM3's did not share the same Getrag 420 as the E46 M3 and Euro E36 M3's carried. Instead it ran a 5 speed similar to the 5 speed found in the E36 M3's here in the US. So after doing extensive re-search and talking with power-train specialists Metric Mechanics over in Missouri, two 6 speed transmission became the options for this project. First being the transmission found in the E46 M3 which is the Getrag 420 transmission, this is the same transmission the SMG uses minus all the SMG components (quite a few pieces involved for anyone considering an SMG to 6 speed swap which we have done and its a heck of a little project) and the ZF S6-37 which is found in the Z4 and 330 ZHP 6 speed. Obviously being this ZM3 was an S54 the Getrag 420 would have been the easiest option. But after some re-search and talking to these guys who rebuild both transmissions and have a very good opinion on which transmission has the strongest internals and talking with them the ZF is actually a much better built and stronger transmission. So with the information they provided on the ZF and no company offering a Getrag 420 that was already rebuilt ( as victor did not want to buy a used transmission, not that there were many available locally at the time) he decided to have us pickup a brand new ZF S6-37 that Metric had sitting on the shelf ready to be shipped out, now keep in mind they deal with alot of transmission work and install alot of conversions at their facility but they had not done a ZM3 5 to 6 speed swap with this transmission, but after some measurements were taken we decided to give it a shot!

Although it was quick learning curve as we ran into a couple bumps in the road as the upgraded JB racing clutch setup another shop installed would not fit with this transmission as the splines on the transmission were different than what was already on the car so we went ahead and installed a clutchmasters FX500 setup that will be able to hold the level 1.5 setup and if he decides to go level 2 later down the road he should have plenty of room to hold the power.

Here are a few pictures of the conversion
