Is this a normal behavior.
My car is a 10' with 6MT.. I never noticed this issue untill my wife pointed it to me when i was trying to teach her how to drive MT... I guess i never noticed it bcz all my previous cars were MTs and i am used the work the clutch quickly... to summarize:
- Stop the car on an Uphill. - Left foot on Clutch, Right foot on Brake. - 1st gear is engaged. - Remove your foot from the break to start working the clutch (the clutch is still pressed at this point.) - You would expect the car to rollback but in my case it will not.. it will take like a second or two then it will start to roll back.. Is this normal??? what will prevent the car from rolling back immediately when i release the break?? I tried this on a parking garage ramp which is very steep and it did the same .. the car did not rollback immediately.

BMW calls it "drive-off assistant," p. 66 in your manual, or at least in mine. It's a great feature if you live in a hilly city; brake stays engaged for 2 sec. after released on a hill so you get a smooth easy start w/o having to use the parking brake

Assuming it's the same as a euro car, if you wait a couple of seconds the brakes will eventually release and it will roll back. But it does help when hill starting.

It lightly engages the brakes enough to prevent the car from rolling back, as others have said. When you engage 1st gear and begin to drive, the car senses the beginning of forward motion and releases the brakes for you.
Now I have a question, if you do sit so long that the DOA disengages and you roll back, can you just release the clutch, press the brake, press the clutch again to re-engage DOA? |

If however you waited for it to let go, rolled back and re-applied the brake DOA would be on again. I think all it knows is you are in gear, on a hill and not moving forward, so it holds line pressure for a couple seconds after you release the brakes. |

Yeah thats what I meant, forgot to mention putting the car back in neutral. Basically restarting the whole process over again. |

I remember learning to drive a 3-speed column shifter in driver's ed in high school. Starting on a hill was one of the things we had to master and we weren't allowed to use the parking brake.

Not just confined to the MT, as the AT cars have it too.

Yup... old technology. My parents 1957 Studebaker station wagon had a hill holder clutch. I DO like it on my 135i. It made it much easier to teach both of my girls how to drive a stick.

Its a great piece of tech. My 08 Mini Cooper S had the same thing, not that I don't know how to hill start.
If you have someone right up your backside on a hill it can be useful... unless you like scaring the person behind you |

I do not think you have to put it in N to re trigger it again.. I kept the clutch pressed then i removed my foot from the brea, waited for the car to start rolling back... Press break again for 5 seconds and the car held it self for 2 seconds again after i released the break

Very normal...try the opposite and it also works: try to roll uphill in reverse and when you let go of the brake the car does not roll forward.
Also, it knows clearly when to do it. If you're facing downhill and 1st gear is engaged, it will immediately start rolling forward when you take the foot off the brakes because it knows you want to go forward. Just like if you're facing uphill but reverse is engaged, it will let the car roll backwards right away after the brakes are released because it knows you want to go backwards. |
