Someone broke into my car
Someone decided to break into my car last night and steal everything I had in my trunk including my work laptop and blackberry...
I wanted to ask the forum on how much would it cost to repair the corner window on the driver's side. To my knowledge, there are no mechanical parts and only the glass pane will need to be replaced. Also, can anyone recommend any good glass shops in the Bay Area and will insurance fully cover this damage? Thanks... Last edited by adobeee; 12-02-2011 at 10:59 AM.. |

Sorry to hear about your luck. I have a question though, did your Blackberry have the "Blackberry Protect" app? If so, you should be able to track where your Blackberry is. Its kinda like "Find my iPhone" app on iTunes.
Good luck. |

Damn that sucks, how the hell did they know you had something in the trunk??? So it's safe to assume that the trunk is operable after the car is locked???? Kinda of crappy.

Sorry for your loss. Insurance should take care of everything under your "Comprehensive" coverage. I'd suggest starting with them as they may require an inspection of the damage, and they also may suggest a good repair facility.

Impossible to break into our cars except for
breaking glass. You are lucky that it wasn't the front windshield. This will be an easy straight forward glass replacement.
No worries.

I'm under the impression there is a lock in the glovebox that prevents the boot (trunk) from being popped from the cockpit.
I think. Certainly worth looking into if you plan to leave anything valuable in there. PS - nice spot for the Altoids. I always keep a box in the car for when I go tunnel bunny cruising. |

I'm confused. How did they get into your trunk via the back seat? When the car is locked the trunk switches (interior and exterior) are disabled, and the release levers for the back seats are located in the trunk.

That really sucks
Stupid question (not trying to shift blame, just curious since I'm always worried about break-ins): Was there anything visible in the car that would have enticed a burglar? |

Really weird that they smashed the back window in, too...
Seems like it's pretty hard to reach the door handle from there. If you're already violating somebodies property like that, why not go for convenience and smash the driver door window in? |

there's your problem. Soma still has a lot of drifter types, since 5th-8th is an absolute cesspit. Granted you were closer to my office where it's a bit cleaner, at night that place is just awful. Try parking inside the Orrick building (2nd and Harrison) at night, it's like $3 flat rate or something after a certain time. $3 for peace of mind and a secure garage might be worth it in the future

Yeah my thoughts exactly. I'm 6'2" and cant figure out how they'd be able to reach that front handle!

Hopefully you have glass coverage. Go to a certified BMW collision center in your area.

If our car is locked, you can not unlock it from inside the car, the handles won't open it and the unlock button is disabled. It's a convertible if that matters.
Will insurance cover the damage? That depends on what type of coverage you have. I would check with your dealer first, they probably have BMW glass in stock, though no clue if your insurance will cover that instead of generic glass. |

VERY disappointed to report that with the car locked, I was able to reach in the window, double-pull the door to unlock it, and push the button to open the trunk. May have had to hit the door unlock button first. I can't remember which sequence worked, but I got in.
On the e46, I could not get the doors unlocked, or the trunk open. As it should be.
