Another CRACKED Wheel! DAMN!

Last month I brought my car into the dealer since my right rear tire was loosing air pressure. They said tire is fine but wheel is cracked. They wanted $450 for a new 18" OEM wheel. I decided to buy one online instead for $225. It was 100% reconditioned, looked like new and I inspected to make sure of no structural damage.

So I had the new wheel installed at BMW and a month later (yesterday) my tire starts loosing pressure again. I bring it back in and what do you know, the same right rear wheel is cracked. WTF. I looked at it while the car was on the lift and yup its cracked. Service guys tell me if I would have bought the wheel new from BMW they would have replaced it for free since there is a 2yr warranty on parts.

Fortunately I call the company I bought the reconditioned wheel from and they are gonna send me a new one but not before I ship the cracked one back.

Where is the problem with this? Thats right, how the fck do I send the wheel back, that leaves me with 3 wheels on my car Thank god after some sweet talking the BMW dealer is letting me leave the car with them while I return the cracked wheel and get another one to replace it with. Plus one of my roommate works at the same company as me so I'll just have to carpool with him for a couple days.

Anyways, whats the deal with BMW and the cracking wheels problem. I've never had this issue on any other car.

Low profile tires don't give you much protection against wheel damage. I haven't heard much of any other complaints so I doubt it's a BMW thing. You probably just hit something once to crack the first wheel and then the second wheel was likely originally cracked prior to "reconditioning" and then the repair didn't hold. I had the exact same thing happen on my Porsche.

Geesh - that sucks. How are the roads out in NJ? I would think a person would have to hit a nice size pothole to crack (2) wheels.

You're to steer around the potholes, not drive through them.

Rubber-band tires don't offer much protection against wheel damage due to road irregularities, and run-flats are that much harsher in terms of transmitting shock through their firmer sidewalls (thus the shitty ride quality). But, I also think that you may have bought a dud. What was the price of a new wheel from Dan at United BMW?

That said though, as BMW's wheels are TUV certified, I'm surprised that you've got this issue. Which style of 18" wheel are you running?

I have had a cracked wheel as well, and had it repaired (welded) for $75 and haven't had any problems since (although its only been a few months).

My theory is the runflat stiff sidewall protects the wheel from damage - I slammed into a huge pothole going 40mph+ so bad it tore the sidewall of one of my fronts, but no wheel damage. When I replaced them with soft hankook non runflats, I noticed 1) the ride is way softer (too soft) and 2) I cracked 1 rim in the 6 months since I have had them.

What happened to me is the edge of the rim was compressed in, taking it out of round and forming two small cracks on the edge of the rim where the section is bent in. So the guy trued the wheel and welded the cracks.

I bought mine from United BMW and one of the rim had a small scratch, the will send me a replacement then I can return the defect one back to them, at least I'm still able to dry my car until the replacement arrives.

Not to sound like "captain obvious" here but what tire pressure(s) are you running?

Try 34psi front and 36psi rear for NJ roads

and Ditto on what ZIPNBYE said "You're to steer around the potholes, not drive through them."

Rust? I don't see how this makes sense. A wheel should be manufactured to stand up to the everyday potholes and the occasional extra large pothole that you just can't avoid. It just doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think that.
