Aerovironment sell the BMW EVSE direct for I think the same price. However I would suggest you look on Ebay. You may find one for less. You can use any 30amp EVSE other than the one made by Schneider because for some reason it doesn't work on the ActiveE. BMW and Schneider and BMW are working on figuring out why.
The big savings is in the labor. Do you know any electricians? is the run from your panel far to your garage? Do you have space in your panel for the 40 amp double-pole breaker? These things matter a lot with the installation cost. If you lived near me I would have helped you do it yourself. I installed the one on the right in the picture myself.
My dad is a construction manager and taught me how to do just about anything you would ever need to do in a house while I was growing up and its not the first time ive worked with electricity. So I was planning on installing it myself from the get go. Ive been searching around for a cheaper charger alternative and ive been unsuccessful thus far.
My box is in my garage, right behind the door on the wall conveniently enough so thats not an issue. Thanks for the warning on Schneider

Someone double check my math...

32kWh for full charge

230W for high end solar panel 3' by 5'
19% efficiency for these PV cells
8 hours of sunlight/day

230W per panel * 19% * 8 hours = 350Wh per panel

32kWh / 350Wh = 92 panels (1380 sq feet of southern facing roof,

Unless you have a solar farm, I think it's pretty hard to get 92 panels at home? Am I missing something here?

I have a 8.775kW array and have been using it for about two years now. I have 39 SunPower SP225 panels and my system averages about 50kWh/day in the July and August and is down to about 25kWh/day in December and January. Both figures are for nice sunny days. I'm not 100% sure how so use the efficiency rate because there's obviously something amiss in the calculations.

Here is a link to view my solar production in real time. You can also look at past production. As I said, I have 39 panels that are 225 watt each (39 x 225 = 8.775).
I'm driving an ActiveE now and running it on sunshine!

Here is how to calculate the power output:

1. DC Rating of the Panels x Number of Panels = Capacity of the system
2. Use NREL PVWatts to Determine the output (kWh/year) (http://mapserve3.nrel.gov/PVWatts_Viewer/index.html) with inputs:
  • Address
  • Capacity
  • Tilt
  • Azimuth (180 = due south)
  • DC to AC Derate Factor (use 0.8)

Keep in mind that panel efficiency deals with the number of watts per sq.ft. that the panels can produce and that weather characteristics along with the quality of the installation (wiring, inverter efficiency, etc.) determine the amount of kWhs that can be produced per watt of system capacity.

Enjoyed the first month!!! 2300 miles on the car already...break in is over.

Jacked up the car today...is this a jack point? This support brace seems to be VERY low...Is this standard on the 1er? Barely got the race jack in there.

Looks unfinished...whatever this is.

Usually there's a gas pipe here...but I guess since this is electric, it's just orange wires.

Anyone with an 1er...does this look like the standard suspension? Rear:

Front:

Stock wheels...style 360...16inch wrapped with 205/55/16 LRR tires...

Offset +44 square setup...

43lbs per wheel with tire...

Let's see what wheels I have in the garage...old school CSL reps...

19inch CSL reps 24lbs, no tire...anyone know how much this would weigh with a tire mounted?

Wayyy too wide for the fronts:

We also have some V710s...

Clears with about 1 inch...

I guess a standard 1er coilover kit should fit? Anyone have light weight wheel suggestions?

FYI... Turner Motorsports picked up their Active E today. I'm actually kind of surprised, I wonder what (if any) plans they have for it.

We had an Awesome ActiveE meet yesterday. I hosted it in the parking lot of my restaurant in Monctlair, NJ. We has 22 ActiveE's show up and 15 other electric cars (Teslas, LEAFs, Volts, iMiEVs). It was really a great event!

That's awesome. Do you know if there will be a Northern Cali meet up in the future?

They do have them, but I'm not up on the dates. You need to join the Facebook BMW ActiveE group and you'll get all the latest ActiveE info: https://www.facebook.com/groups/239198747743/
