Why 1M and not M1?
Doing a search turned up nothing but why are they calling it the 1M. Its weird to put the number first considering past cars

im sorry to say but you didn't search as its been discussed before... it is called 1m instead of m1 due to the classic e21 m1 which the 1m is ultimately not worthy of carrying the name.

Because they didn't think of it. Damn, where were you when they were thinking of a name?

While the 1M has already proven itself worthy to be called an M there is a perfectly logical reason why it wasn't bestowed the name M1 which everyone else has mentioned.
History is something that shouldn't be forgotten or abused and to many the original M1 remains a pinnacle point in BMW's history and to have given it's name to the lowest of all M cars would have been dreadful. Thank heavens BMW also felt the same way. |

Well, the M versions of the X5 and X6 couldn't be called MX5 and MX6 because then BMW would have a lawsuit on its hands from Mazda.
