45.5mpg and 640 mile range from a 325i - beat that!

The gauntlet's been thrown down people! On my way to the UK meet I set a new personal best of 45.5mpg. This wasn't after just resetting the counter, oh no. This was after 100 miles of driving. The 325i also reported a 550 mile range after 90 miles driven.

Sorry about the poor pics - camera phone and all...can anyone beat that?

2.5 litre straight-six petrol my man! And that mpg figure was despite 20mins of gridlock on the M25 where we were travelling at 5mph (incidentally, I took the photos halfway through the gridlock).

320d beats it...

60.3mpg and predicted total range of 805miles after 90 miles

Last two are after getting home - 55.3 overall and 760ish total range (keeping up with Marilyn's 330i dropped mpg from 60 to 53 )

what was the average speed to achieve such a rate of fuel useagw over the 100miles?

when you have the opportunity to travel the same route in the opposite direction, can you please advise on your mpg rate again.

could there have been a slight downward grade for most of the 100 miles?

i cannot replicate the same rate in my 2.5 litre car, even with just me driving and nothing in the car or boot to add extra weight.

what's the secret?

Slightly OT, but does anyone know why the petrol tank holds 2 litres more than the diesel tank?

By the time I had got back home I had done a 400 mile round trip and the MPG was 43.4mpg. Still just over a quarter of a tank remaining. Bear in mind that once I had got up to the meet I was doing a bit of aggressive driving to get some good shots for the video and on the way back I was pushing it a bit. Average speed on the way up there was 67.4mph, can't remember on the way back.

I can regularly hit 41.5mpg with little effort on the motorway, and usually hit 44mpg given enough miles. Air-con is always on.

My right foot alone gives 41.5mpg, to get the rest I rely on using the cruise control. I don't touch the accelerator at all, only blip the cruise stalk when I need to accelerate or decelerate, in 5mph increments. Obviously when I get to tailbacks etc the cruise goes off and I manage it myself until i'm up to speed again.

In my experience, auto gearboxes sap a lot of fuel economy. My E46 318i auto could only do 44mpg (all me as it didn't have cruise control), and that was a 4cylider 1.9 litre engine. I always use Shell Optimax petrol as well. Hope that helps!

That is truly impressive. I can only get about 400 miles on a tankful of "petrol" with my 330i 3 litre engine. So you're saying you can easily get 500 miles out of a tankful, yes?

I'll have to visit the local Shell stations here. I don't know if we get that same formula in the States, doubt it though.

500 miles, yes.
I may just have a good engine - I broke it in a bit differently than the norm and it seems to be paying off...

Are you sure you have a 325, and not a diesel

Thats such an impressive figure to get on a regular basis- I live in the UK, and do mostly dual carriageway driving(A3, A311) in my 325 SE and I am lucky to get 32 MPG, average speed around 36 mph, nothing particulalry aggresive, but typically cruise at 80 mph, when free of the congestion. I get around 400 miles on a tank.

I have not tried Cruise Control driving yet.

How did you break your car in ? did you remove a couple of cylinders !

Ha ha ha...you had me for a moment until I realized you are figuring in liters and not gallons. Your 98.4 liters comes to about 26 MPG...

P.S. In the "for what it's worth" department - I got an overall 28.3 mpg for the trip. Which isn't bad, considering some of the "oh look, I gotta catch up, darn it!" acceleration I was doing...

No man this is no joke - that's mpg not l/100km. The UK doesn't use that measurement, we think in miles just like the US.
