How do you know if you have the Harmon Kardon/ What sound options were available for our cars?

HK was only an option for 2011+ and it has a harman/kardon logo on the speaker grilles.

Tweeters are built into the base of the windshield roof pillars with "Harmon Kardon" on the grills. Like the King said, only available on the 2011+ models.

Different, but similar question to OP:

I have tweeters on mine..but they aren't Harmon Kardon (no logo/name). My model is a 2008 128i. Is this the hi-fi?

The base system for 2008-2010 had 6 speakers: 2 in the doors, 2 small "subs" under the seats, then two speakers on the rear deck. Premium HiFi was the upgraded system and had 10 speakers. I have the Premium and it's "adequate" for my needs. 2011+ cars had two options as well but the old Premium HiFi became the new base and the HK was added above that.

I'm pretty sure HK was offered for my 2010 (N54) 135i. There was just the base stereo and the HK for my 2010. OP - the easiest way to tell IF you have HK is if your car has the tweeters next to your door mirrors.

US Spec 1ers never had 3 options. I have a 2010 and the top option was not HK, it was Premium HiFi. HK was only available in 2011 and up.

I checked my military car sales pdf... for M.Y. 2010 there was only the base stereo and Premium HiFi system (option code: #677) offered.

I believe the $800+/- Premium option on earlier cars is the same thing as the current H-K system. You will occasionally find references to "Logic7" for the Premium Sound Package of earlier years and that is a H-K trademark.

Yes. There was no H/K option in 2008 so you won't see H/K on the tweeter.

2008-2010:
Base: 6 speakers, no tweeters.
HiFi: 10 speakers incl. tweeters. No H/K logo.

2011-2012:
Base (HiFi): 10 speakers incl. tweeters, no H/K logo.
H/K: Same 10 speakers with tweeters, but includes H/K logo

Right, the Prem. HiFi and H/K are the exact same system from what I've read save for the logo on the tweeters. Also, IIRC the only model years with the decontented base stereo are 2010 and the early build 2011 cars. Late 2011-2012 cars have the same base unit as the 08 and 09 models.

Dackelon nailed it. Also, 2010+ base systems (cost-cutting) don't have A pillar speakers; whereas 2008/2009 base systems did, also had amped systems with a tad larger subs. Pre-2010 base systems are quite good, but won't have the H/K tags on the pillars, just plain pillar speakers/grills.

However; Angry3 could be correct about late model 2011-12s having reverted back to the higher 08-09 base system standards.

We've got Tweeters w/ NO logo & an amp (we know because it was replaced under warranty when it failed last year) on our 2010 conv ordered 11/2010 & delivered 1/4/11, we didn't order any upgraded radio. It does not have an eq, or HK Logos and is at best just a bit better than adequate when it is cranked up a bit. At low volume its lacking highs and lows.

We've had loaner cars with the HK and they always had an EQ and logos.

I can't imagine how crappy the basic, non amp, non tweeter radio must sound.

Vert's have different stereo specs than the Coupes. I'm no Vert expert, but I remember the Vert's having better base stereo's than the Coupes.

I think what a few of us are saying is that the difference between the Premium HiFi system and the HK system is the HK logos.
