They pulled the same trick with the subframe tear on my E46 M3 then back tracked fast when I had a lawyer contact them.
We really do get duped in Australia at times. |

There is a certain number of incidents (ie. compensation) before they will take action. Unfortunately that's how this business works. Only way is get gov orgs involved and aware of the risks.
This reminds of that NSW Road death toll ad, "How many deaths is reasonable?" BMW Aus says > 1 < x before it'll potentially cost them more money to actually do the recall.

Maybe BMW Australia will finally take action
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-2...hicles/9491766
More than two years since I first posted about this "known problem" and the steps BMW was taking to address it in the US. Maybe BMW Australia is finally being forced to "man up" and do the right thing by their Australian customers . . . though it's still not clear whether the E82 1 Series/1M will be on the Australian recall list, even though they recalled these cars in the USA. -------------------------US RECALL: BMW Driver-Side Front Air Bag Module Voluntary Safety Recall BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall involving Driver-Side Front Air Bag Module on certain BMW vehicles that are equipped with non-desiccated Takata PSDI-5 inflators. These vehicles, covering model years 2006-2015 have not been part of earlier Takata-related air bag recalls. There are approximately 840,000 vehicles in the US. Considering the age of the E46 models versus E9x and E8x models, BMW probably feels the 'younger' airbags are safe enough for now. Back when we first started doing the E46 campaigns, we were just fitting new replacement bags as if the car had been in a crash.
Many months pass and some cars received another new passenger airbag module at the same time when their driver one was replaced. We will eventually get ours replaced.. BTW, no danger money for us poor sods replacing the things! |

What makes no sense is that the 1 Series isn't on the ACCC list of cars that have the Takata airbag. I think BMW Australia technically has until April 3rd to come clean on all vehicles that need to be added to the list, but given they have already recalled these exact cars in the US it seems strange. Can't see any realistic scenario where they were fitting one airport for the US on the factory line and a different one for Australia—not plausible.

I seem to remember there being a different part number on the US version of our cars so it is plausible that we are not effected. It is also plausible that we are but won't find out until it is too late.

Since there are now 2017 models from other makes on that list, i don't see why our cars are not on the list already. The driver airbag is a Takata item. Passenger front is a TRW bag.

The exclusion of 1 series on original list is bewildering. I’m concerned. We recently purchased and my beloved drives it daily. That BMW Aus sit on their hands, or worse, respond that the car is not currently subject to a recall, all the while people have already been injured locally, there’s been no explanation as to why 1 series is not on Product safety Aus website. I can only hope they submit 1 series before alleged April deadline. Where’s the action, concern, customer service, accountability ?

Just noticed that the paragraph below has appeared on BMW's recall webpage. Bet that the 1-Series is about to be miraculously added to the Takata recall list . . . after BMW Australia has been refusing to engage with 1-Series owners on the issue for more than two years. I try to be a reasonable person, but this sh*t really makes me angry. BMW know damn well that our cars have the Takata drivers airbag, they've already recalled them in the US, and they're just dragging it out for as long as they possibly can.
------------------------------------------------------------------ https://www.bmw.com.au/recall BMW Australia will be recalling additional vehicles with affected Takata airbags in accordance with the Compulsory Recall Notice and more specifically, the BMW Australia Recall Initiation Schedule. Details of this schedule will be published by 1 July 2018. On initiation of a recall which covers your vehicle and/or model, you will be contacted.

Mine is booked in for driver side airbag replacement next week.
Has anyone on here had it done and ended up with a couple of holes in the rear of the steering wheel for them to access the airbag assy. release springs? or Was the steering wheel cover trim removed to access the release springs? The former method is popular on You Tube but looks a bit ghetto style to me. |

That is the official method to release the airbag. There is a slit at 3oclock and 9oclock on the steering wheel. A T25 or similar screwdriver is inserted to depress the spring that latches the airbag in place.
If the holes are massive then someone used too large of a tool or dug around for too long trying to find the spring at the wrong angle. On these wheels, it's very easy to find the spring. Folks who visit a dealership regularly will be the first to get new bags as they are beating Australia Post (and perhaps the department which posts out the letters). |

I can actually feel the soft spots on the back of the steering wheel where a screw driver or BMW special tool ##### will be poked through. They are at about 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock on mine. I might take before and after photos. If the holes are unsightly, I guess they could be covered with a small trim rivet/plug like this: https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=i&r...30659433798703
