how bad is this...
Thank you NJdot!
can you view this? Well thank you NJDOT for dropping a sign in the middle of a major highway at 1am. This is the worst but all 4 tires look like this. I know the side wall is gone because i can stick my finger in the tire! But how about the rim? I'm having the insurance guy show up today....let's see what he says.. |

I bet they will be able to refurbish your rim (~$150) vs new rim (~$350)

You might be able to have damages covered by the state. I know some states do this for damage caused by potholes. It's worth checking into..

Good you could see it....all 4 TPS are off line...all 4 rims are like this.
I had the insurance adjuster over today at lunch and his words "You are lucky they didn't come off...you could have died!" yeah no kidding...no side wall no tire! I've called the state waiting for their paper work. Just be careful out there. |

Oooh that's pretty bad. Don't think I've ever seen a "cracked" tire.
Hopefully, the city reimburses you appropriately (as they should)

Yeah 1am on a highway i was going 70mph middle lane and apparently a big merge left sign had fallen off a NJDOT truck and was laying in the middle of the road. Sadly the highway was not lit up so could not see it. Hit it square.
All 4 tires had the side walls cut square and the rims damaged. The insurance adjuster came over yesterday, first words out of his mouth..."How did you not die! These tires should have failed!" They are a total write off. The insurance is giving me $1900 for the 4. So the question is.....can WTF am i going to do? I mean i think the TPS system on these rims is still good....how do you check? Do i have to go to BMW? How do i take them off if they are good? Again BMW? How do i get them on a new set of rims i'm going to be buying from Tire rack? So will i have to remove the TPMS from the rims, order rims and tires from tire rack. Receive the tires on the rims. Have the tires pulled off the rim the TPMS installed and then have the tire put back on? This is nuts...and all because NJDOT can't keep its shit together? Oh and what do i do with the old rims? |

Sounds similar to what happened to me a few years ago when I drove my MINI over a guard rail section that fell off a CT DOT truck on the Merritt Pkwy during a heavy rain. Slashed holes in 2 of my tires and damaged the rims.. Several cars were pulled over with damage.
I took lots of pictures and of course had to get towed. I don't remember the process exactly, but I wrote a detailed letter (with all the pics) to the proper CT DOT agency, and their insurance ended up cutting me a check for the full cost of the 2 new tires and wheels.

ok so need some help here guys....
1) How do i test to see if the TPMS's on the damaged rims is still working 100% 2) How hard is it to take them off the old rims? 3) Ok they are giving me $1900, that's enough for 4 OZ since they seem to be basic, high end and strong. But do i go for 17's or 18's? I'm leaning to the 17's because that will give me more tire choice and a softer ride....I DON"T AUTO CROSS!!!I LIVE IN NJ WHERE OUR ROADS ARE FOR SHIT!3 3A) Option 1 O.Z. Formula HLT Finish: Matte Grey 3B) Option 2 O.Z. Superturismo GT Finish: Matte Grey 4) So say the TPMS's are ok, how the heck do i take them from the old rims and on to the new rims? Will this be one of those silly times where you have to order everything from tire rack separately and then assemble it yourself? FIRST PERSON who says racing or autocross I will drop kick a kitten into a wood chipper! This is a daily driver….i have never autocrossed this car…and when I do AUTOCROSS I call up enterprise and rent a Fiat 500. So I really don’t care about my race times nor autocrossing. I actually like the OZ look better. But i'm not sure if i should stick with 18's or 17's...i'm leaning strongly to 17's just to have a thicker sidewall to absorb some of the roads around here.
My main issue is the TPMS. If i can recycle them it saves me $230 which i can use to buy better tires. |

Tire rack charges $231 to install 4 TPS sensors in a wheel/tire package.
I dont think its worth your time to order a package without TPS sensors and take 2 sets of wheels/tires to a shop to.... 1. pay to have your tps sensors removed from your stock wheels 2. buy TPS sensor rebuild kits 3. pay to have the new tires unmounted and TPS sensors installed 4. and pay to have the new wheels and tires rebalanced Looks like you could save $50 or so using the old TPS sensors that are "likely" still good. Tire rack is really good about shipping wheels and tires without any damage to the rims from installation. I would hate to see your new rims get scratched up being unmounted, but that is a very good possibility depending on where you go. |

Depending on the tread on your tires, $1900 wasnt a very good deal for you. I would call your local BMW dealer and ask for a price for 4 new wheels/tires/TPS sensors installed. They will come back with $3500 or something like that. Then call your insurance and BITCH!!!!
They will likely meet you somewhere in the middle ($2600 or so) and you will have plenty of money to order from Tire Rack. |

well, here is what i'm thiking i an do with the $1900.
Formula HLT(Matte Grey) (17") + Continental PureContact (due to the shit weather and horrid roads) = $1,784.56 NOT including the TPMS. With TPMS it's going to be $2,016.52.... So it's an issue of how do test the old TPMs and move it to the new tires? |

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....roup_ID=682190 But the cost and hassle of having the old tires unmounted and the sensors tested, moved to the new wheels feels like a wash (not to mention the risk of damage to your brand new wheels depending on what type of shop you use). If I were you, I would buy the new sensors and have them installed on the wheel/tire package from TireRack. |

Yeah i think you are right...just get the tires with the rims and the TPMs installed.
Then take off the old tires and pull out the TPMs and craigs list them for $100 and sell the damaged rims for another $100.....yeah it could work. thoughts on going to the 17's? on a 135i? |

IMO, you need to have the insurance cut you a new check to cover the total cost of replacement including the TPMS sensors. That's why you pay them.
If you're willing to settle for replacing the wheels/tires/sensors with their check plus money out of your pocket, you're a better man than I. |

well can't keep driving on winter tires in the middle of the summer....
so pulled the trigger on tire rack 18x8 O.Z. Superturismo GT Matte Grey + 215/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 (W- or Y-Speed Rated) 5-Rib Tread Design Blackwall so guess this makes the care a square set up now...this should be interesting? 0.5in bigger in front and 0.5 smaller in the back. This will make the autocross guys scream and yell and they will drop kick kittens into wood chippers. but for your average joe that sees "spirited" driving once a month or so...this will work. I wonder how odd the slighter fatter front tire will "feel" any thoughts? also a quick google search...can't find any 135's rocking this rim? how odd? OZ rims are very Euro / WRC....odd that i couldn't find one on a 135i |
