I did the homelink/autodim mirror retrofit on my 325i and it was very straightforward all you need is the retrofit harness which you can find on getbmwparts i think and its like 20-30 bucks. then the diy's on e90post will take you step by step on the rewiring and stuff, pretty straightforward stuff.

Another alternative is "Flash2Pass". You flash your highbeams twice to open the garage door. No button to push and hands stay on the wheel. Installation is simple. You wire in the sending unit under the hood to the high beam wire on one side, I did the passenger's side in my 128i. You then replace the button in your garage with the receiver (which has a button and looks better than my button looked). Cost for the first car is about $75 and about half that for additional cars. The sending unit that goes in the car is a small black plastic box that was easy to tuck into an unobtrusive location under the hood in the engine compartment.

My neighbor(simon.kruger on this forum) did the homelink retrofit on his 1M. He said it scared the chit out of him having to yank the original mirror off the shield. I am sure he can provide more details although I don't think he took any pics. When I get my new toy I will be doing the same....looks great and is a must in my book.
