The 1M will go faster. Just as a tuned 135i will go faster than that. Speedos lie - we all know that! They read about 5% higher - they have too by German law. So you don't get a speeding ticket by accident.
EmmDrei - has said he has seen 275 kph on his speedo. But that was not GPS, just what the speedo said. 275 kph = 271 mph. 271 kph = 167 mph, take off 5% and you have 159 mph. Just about what BMW says a 1M will do. The 1M obivously has a speed limiter - I think due to the short wheel base. My 135i would do 155 mph on the speedo stock. The real speed (confirmed via GPS) was 148 mph. Now tuned the fastst I have seen WITH gps is 274 kph (169 mph) but that was at 6,100 rpms (I have a 6MT). I know I have hit 6,300 rpms a few times, but I was without my gps navi. Guys on the 1er forum say a chipped 135i will see 294 kph! I don't know. I have done 280+ kph and that was damm fast enough for me. |

So, their car has the limiter removed?
Also, 'M1 turbo?' wtf EVO??

170mph with speedo inaccuracy would equate to around 160mph mark and IMO will be the speed limiter kicking in.
When we were at a 30-130mph track day last year in my old man's stock M5, we found out this ourselves. As well as doing a 30-130mph run against the clock, you were also able to go out and do a top speed run on the 1.6 mile runway.. This is what happened.. Notice it stops dead at 170mph (speed limiter) and was very very noticable and you can actually hear the engine note on the vid if you turn it up. The gutting thing was, we had nearly half the runway left and was only half way through 6th gear (7 speed). When we did the same run earlier the V-Box indicated we had hit 160.8mph. This was to be repeated when we did a further run later in the day.. Last edited by Vtec Abuser; 08-16-2011 at 03:49 AM.. |

Not many people know this... but BMW AG offers an upgraded V-max on all M models (except the 1M). You have to go thru one of thier M track schools, pass and bring the certificate with you to a BMW Zentrum. They will code your M to 280 kph V-max. Of course you also have to the Zentrum/Dealer for teh coding too. lol Dackel |

Dackel how comes the 1M is left in the blue on this one? Is it because of its short wheelbase or bad aerodynamics and therefore to "jumpy" at high speed?
I'm seeing lots of simularities with the M3 sedan here. Maybe you know the answer or will ask the next time you're "on tour" about the speed limiter removal on the 1M Thanks |

I do not know why BMW will not offer a "higher speed limiter" for the 1M like it does for the rest of the M lineup. Even for the x6/x5 they offer the higher limiter. Its weird. I remember Scott26 said one of the reasons why the 1M doesn't have the M3 style hood buldge was bc of high speed aerodynamics. I took that to mean positive lift. And since we all know the 1er is a jumpy beast... this makes sense why its the only M with a preset limiter. I will ask on my next "tour" of BMW. Dackel on Tour! lol |
