2 1M's for sale...

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
Question for you guys/gals. Paul Miller BMW has 2 1M's for sale. They were used as "demonstrators" at the BMW Performance Center. Does this mean they were pretty well beat on?..tracked?...One has a disclosure that the hood was re-painted. Track debris?..Considering purchasing. Any input would be appreciated...thanks!

Yes. They were basically driven by random strangers on a track for 95%+ of their miles.

Yes these were definitely driven very hard, I did PCD for mine and was a witness/guilty party of doing that. They were driven on the the track and skidpad.

I remember my PCD instructor telling my friend and I, "so for you guys, just keep it in second for this short course. Really no need to change gears!"

Agreed. I'm maintaining a personal black list of these cars. I just wish their true origin was noted in Carfax.

Also, are they even CPO'd? I'm not seeing that on most of the listings...

In addition to the PCD days, these cars were also used for the ///M Driving schools. I did one last year and one of the instructors mentioned that they had already replaced the clutch 2 or 3 times on many of their fleet of 1Ms. Don't get me wrong these cars were meant to be driven hard, but for the same money or less you should be able to get one that has had a much gentler start to this world.

IMHO buying one of those cars is like buying a former rental car.

If they are cheap enough AND CPO'ed I'd buy one. At least you know that BMW took care of them. Much better then some of these that are getting modded, driven hard and put back to stock by God knows who. Like I said, key elements are price and CPO!

Are these test cars being sold CPO?

Nope.

According to what I heard from BMWNA, that's not possible. And, for that reason, I would never touch these cars. I'm keeping a list of VIN's that I've personally blacklisted.

Also, they aren't cheap enough, in my opinion, to account for the amount of consistent abusive they've received. They're actually asking premium prices for these!

I'd rather buy from a fellow 1addict, whom I know took care of their car, than one of these beaten up cars. Yes, the cars are built for this. But, it's one thing to have one single responsible owner beat up their high performance car, and another entirely to have a bunch of "students" beat up on it.

If BMW NA refuses to CPO the vehicles that should be all the insight anyone needs to the future reliability of these 'demonstrator' vehicles.

What did you actually hear from BMWNA? Most dealers are reluctant to CPO cars with less than 10k miles and more than 2 years left on the original warranty.

I had my local dealership inquire with BMWNA for me and they claimed that these cars were ineligible for CPO. Granted, I don't have documented proof of this. Nor am I aware of any rejections.

(And you're right, many are reluctant to CPO cars that new -- but there are a bunch of non-1M's on the market of this age that *are* CPO'd.)
