Yeah, so if you try hard enough it turns out it's possible to lock your keys in a 135i convertible with comfort access.

Does anyone know if there are any vulnerabilities in the design that I could use to get into the car & save myself the cost of a BMW callout?

Is one to assume that you only have one comfort access key? No valet key, either?

haha yes. it's been a comedy of errors this morning. I have a spare comfort access key, which I asked my SO to bring to me... in the process of getting into the car she gave it to our two year old daughter who's put it somewhere around the house for us to find. ... so i'm going home now for a fun game of hide & seek.

when I find the key I'll tape the valet key to the exterior of the vehicle to prevent this happening again.

That comfort access safety net is really 50/50. A couple weeks ago I went shopping and put my bags in the trunk and closed the lid. However the lid kept opening and the light would flash. I tried like 4 times before I finally realized why. I left my keys in the shopping bag. I thought this was the coolest thing ever so I went over to my buddy who lives a few houses up from me to show him. Just to be safe, I got in the car and gave him the keys and told him to lock the doors with the key fob. He then opened the trunk, threw the keys in, and closed the lid. The lid locked. It was the weirdest thing haha

I agree. I think it's desired behaviour to be unable to unlock the doors from the outside if the key is in the car, so that you can lock yourself in the car in a dodgy neighbourhood.

But the car usually prevents you from locking it if the key's not present, or locking the car then stepping out of the car and closing the door with it locked.

Twice I've found myself standing outside the locked car without a key wondering how exactly that came to happen. Fortunately last time it happened I wasn't far from the spare.

Anyway, I've found the spare that our toddler hid, so I'll go and get the car this evening. I've got a place in mind where I'll be mounting the non-electronic key with the help of black electrical tape for if it ever happens again.

Don't let your toddler run around the house with your car keys, that's just stupid. (Well, probably not much more stupid than storing the car key in the centre console rather than your pocket while driving, but y'know.)

For the sake of archiving this thread if anyone googles for it in future. The way most roadside-assist people open your car is using one of these: https://www.bunnings.com.au/winbag-i...30389_p1142252

You push it in halfway up the drivers side window, or between the window and the roof. By inflating it, you force open a gap where you can slide in a metal hook (straightened out coathanger if you're doing it yourself) to either pull open the door handle, or press the 'door unlock' button on the dash.

You sign a wavier before hand to say you won't go sue them if they bend or break your door, window or roof.

Yeah I've seen those used a few times. I'm guessing this means you ended up calling a lock service? Lol

I have CA and no spare key, it makes me a bit paranoid...

How can they get away without giving you two keys? I thought that was standard.

Bought it used and they just didn't have the other

I've thought about getting a replacement but it's rather pricey at $350

You would think that would on them to provide you with a second key at no cost to you.

You'd think! I tried to negotiate on this car but they were not budging on it. Only got a couple grand off the OTD price in the end.

The only way I know of to lock keys in the car; if you open door, touch the lock area on the handle afterwards to activate CA, then put the key in the car whether in bag, purse, etc., close the door, it will lock before you can grab other door to open My wife did this twice on our old X5, but they X5 beeps telling you it will lock when you close the door, wont happen on the 135 since there are no sounds.

Had same thing, 1 key. But after I filled out the BMW follow up survey and mentioned only 1 key. Another one miraculously came via courier

it won't help you if you loose your key, but you can protect yourself from locking your keys in the car even if you only have one key.

get the mechanical key (which lets you into the car but can't start it) and secure it to a secret location on the outside of the car ... or keep it in a desk draw, and only use the 'fob' to operate the car.

If your car was CPO, the rules state they have to give you 2 keys. If you bought used from a non BMW dealer, doubt BMW will assist with freebie.
