Questions for 130i owners

Hey guys,

I’m looking to purchase a used manual 130i early next year, so am in the process of doing some research. I have a bunch of questions which I hope some of the 130i owners here might be able to help me out with:

1. Any recommendations on the cheapest way to source a Quaife LSD, and places in Sydney to install one? What is the going rate for installation, and the LSD itself?

2. Is it possible to buy the BMW Performance SSK without the shift knob and alcantara boot? Is the 125i/128i SSK (as found in the US) compatible with the 130i?

3. Do the pre-LCI (2005-07) models come with the following equipment as standard: aux-in iPod jack, Bluetooth, voice control, adaptive (cornering) bi-xenon headlights, LED puddle lights on each exterior doorhandle, and do the angel eyes light up when you unlock the car?

4. What real-world fuel consumption/range per tank figures are you getting?

5. Approximate cost of a standard service at a BMW dealer in Sydney?

6. Is the standard audio a 6-speaker system, or a 10-speaker Hi-Fi system?

If anyone can answer any of these questions, that’d be much appreciated. Cheers!

I'm selling mine at the moment... but to help you with a few questions;

Yes;
Aux-in iPod jack
Bluetooth
Voice control
Bi-xenon headlights
LED puddle lights on each exterior doorhandles (though I heard tonight this could be a 'lights package' with footwell lighting?)

No;
Adaptive (cornering), they're just bi-xenon
Angel eyes don't light up

What real-world fuel consumption/range per tank figures are you getting?
Depends how it is driven! It's a NA 6 cylinder so don't expect amazing fuel. Still betters an R32 though.

Approximate cost of a standard service at a BMW dealer in Sydney?
Varies, but the BMW 130i has been one of the cheapest cars I've ever had to service before. Service interval is 20,000km/2 years, or when the electronic display tells you something needs replacing.

Is the standard audio a 6-speaker system, or a 10-speaker Hi-Fi system?
Later model cars had optional systems I think. Mine is the BMW Professional but I think it is still a 6-speaker system.

Good luck! They're an amazing car!

1.Got mine through a group buy on babybmw, I think Southern BM is a local distributor, lots of places can do an install, where abouts are you located?
Cost - depends on where you end up getting it from, etc I'd say 2.5K+.

4. Used to be 12.2 now down to low 11s, this is driving it with total disregard for economy.

5. Why would you bother, there are reputable specialists that will cost half as much..

Not sure on number of speakers and other gizmos (to busy driving).

So your current steed is a 335 and you are thinking of getting a 130i?
I was thinking of doing the opposite.

Haha, the 335i is my mum's car, which I have frequent access to A 130i of my own would be a good complement to it I think

Finally! Someone considering a 130i instead of a MkV R32. You will not be disappointed mate.

2. Yes. Full SSK kit from UK was around AUD $180 last time I checked.

1. Any recommendations on the cheapest way to source a Quaife LSD, and places in Sydney to install one? What is the going rate for installation, and the LSD itself?

Andrew from SouthernBM is probably your best option here. He sent me a damn competitive price for the unit (don't recall what it was), I opted out, as I didn't trust anyone up here to fit it.

2. Is it possible to buy the BMW Performance SSK without the shift knob and alcantara boot? Is the 125i/128i SSK (as found in the US) compatible with the 130i?

I bought mine with the boot & knob. Used the SSK - boot & knob sitting around somewhere. Should be pretty cheap to get one from the UK or Andrew from SouthernBM.

3. Do the pre-LCI (2005-07) models come with the following equipment as standard:
aux-in - Yes
iPod jack - No (Option - I think)
Bluetooth - Yes
Voice control - Yes - never ever used it.
Adaptive (cornering) bi-xenon headlights - Just bi-xenon, they no movey movey
LED puddle lights on each exterior doorhandle - Yes
do the angel eyes light up when you unlock the car - No

4. What real-world fuel consumption/range per tank figures are you getting?
Not the greatest - I get anywhere between 350-450kms per 45L tank. Depending on the grin on my face.

5. Approximate cost of a standard service at a BMW dealer in Sydney?
No idea.

6. Is the standard audio a 6-speaker system, or a 10-speaker Hi-Fi system?
6 is standard. I've got the 10-speaker Hi-Fi which is much better but still nothing to write home or anywhere else about.

Hope this helps but must say. Features and tit-bits aside, this thing's engine is amazing, with the window down it sounds amazing and the power delivery is linear till the red line, bit low on torque though on the lower end. I have the privilege of driving some pretty nice cars on most day and the 130i still manages to put a smile on my face almost every time I put my foot down.

Most of the other have answered all of your questions but my average fuel for the last 20,000 km is 8.5 litres /100 km. That is all my driving, fast, slow and freeway.

So on the non-idrive Professional radio, you can get it to display trip computer functions right? (e.g. fuel consumption, range etc.)

Do you have to navigate to this menu each time you start the car up?

There's a menu in the Professional Radio to display all that info - think the option comes up when you press the Menu button. All this info is available as you start on the little screen in between the speedo & rev counter too, controlled via the BC button and toggle switch on the indicator stalk (I love the BMW indicator stalk system, by the way!).

Woosh, really not sure mate about he tank size. Whenever I fill up it about 40-42L of fuel and I usually do it when the refuel light comes on. Just assumed it was about a 45L but 53L with the reserve tank makes much more sense. Sorry!

I once used the voice command when my sister was in the car and was trying to demonstrate how cool my car was and I vaguely uttered her digits and it crack lady said "Dial Ilma" and dialed her number. Only because she was the last dialed - needless to say I kept that titbit to myself.

Hi all,
Sad day today, said goodbye to the RX7 , and looking for a more sensible car..

instead of starting a new thread i thought i'd just ask some questions here:
  • Does anyone have the 2007 130i brochure? can't really find one on the net, and what options there were.

  • Face lifted (2007) 130i's, what changes there were?
Was direct injection added for the face lifted 130i's? if yes, how much fuel/power does it save/gain? isit worth waiting for one?

  • Located in Melbourne Collingwood? any good trustworthy specialist service centers nearby.

  • Should i get the car checked out by a BMW dealer first? or specialist service center better?

  • Not really sure what the options are but i notice the navigation with iDrive. Isit useful? or 2 cup holders better?

  • Does rear park assist come on all 130i's?

  • Is there any must have options i should look out for?
