How likely is it you'll keep your E90 after warranty expires?

Maybe this is too far ahead in the future for some, but if you bought your E90, just out of curiosity, how likely is it you'll keep your E90 after your warranty on it expires?

I've heard the costs can be astronomical on repairs for foreign cars. I was planning on holding on to my car for a while after the warranty was up, but since I've been having a lot of problems after only a year, now I'm not so sure I want to keep it after the warranty is up.

How about any prior 3-series owners here? Can you guys offer any insight? Have you kept your car after warranty? Was it a good or bad choice? Has it been expensive to keep your car after warranty?

Thanks for the replies

I'm gonna get the extended warranty, but after that runs out I think I will sell the vehicle. I don't think that it is worth the hassle and out of pocket expenses after the warranty is up.

Right now, I am planning on keeping the car for 8-10 years, but you never know what's going to come out next that you must have.

I'm already wondering about what to do if BMW comes out with a 335xi.

It would really depend on the cost though.

I LOVE MY CAR.

If im gonna keep it, I'd have to get the extended warranty on it. If not, I would just buy a new one. I know it's not as bad as many people claim it to be, but I dont wanna take my chances with German cars.

We already know there will be 335xi (e92) by Q4 '07 (was mentioned in the BMW press info). Its likely a 335xi (e90) would follow (assuming the inside info that the e90 will see 328/335 is correct).

[QUOTE=sharp1183] I've heard the costs can be astronomical on repairs for foreign cars.QUOTE]

not true, u need to be more specific. those japanese make are foreign, i don't see their repair cost astronomical, if anything the least expensive to maintain. it goes both ways for all makes and models, i feel sorry for all the problems u've had on ur 1st year experience with the car. i have the opposite experience with my 325, no troubles or major hiccups in over 9 months. i'll make my decision on extended warranty when time is about to expire but i won't hesitate to not extend it if i absolutely have no issues with the car.

I plan on keeping the car for at least 6-7 years. My '96 Volvo 850 has ~220k and I hope the E90 can at least make it to 100k without any major repairs (< $1000). I'm lowering my expectations since its a BMW.

In a few years we'll see what parts are failing, etc... and I think one can make an educated decision about keeping or selling their E90 then. Without a doubt though I'll be getting the extended maintenance down the line, maybe not the warranty since thats a bit pricier.

I bought my current car from my parents and they racked up 180k miles in about 5 years. The car was in service all the damn time, and that made the car expensive to own. No majors repairs but I had to take the car to get two exhaust valves replaced since they failed (which was about $600).

I hope my experience is the same with the E90. You're lucky when your cars turns out to be something you can truly rely on all the time but I don't know how often that occurs in the automobile industry. My dad had two Nissan's that never missed a beat, and we've had 3 Lexus cars with no issues at all. (The first two were leased for 3 years though.)

The thing that frightens me the most down the line with the newer BMW's are the electronics and computers. Those are the most expensive time wise to diagnose. Replacing a sensor is sometimes guess & check.

I think mechanically cars, especially the european ones that ship to the states, have very high reliability rates.

We should maybe start a thread on what we can do to extend the life of our cars. Like changing oil, oil filter, air filter every 5k. Changing spark plugs every 50k. Checking coolant weekly. Checking tire pressure weekly if not more.

Hopefully there's more we can do too.

I have a 5-yr loan, so I need to keep it at least for that long, but aiming for 7-yrs which is average for me. I'll probably get the extended warranty & maintenance . My free 4-yr 50K warranty will lapse in about 3-yrs at the mileage rate that I'm currently going.

If it stays basically troublefree then I will probably keep it for at least 5 years.

I'll probably keep it quite a while. Exactly how long? I'm not sure, but my '97 Toyota Tacoma is still runnin' fine and I have no plans to sell her any time soon. Should be due for her 90k check up next month.

I plan to keep the car for 75k miles and get the warranty (not the full extended warranty) I think I will keep the car for at least 5 years or so. I had the car for almost a year now without any problems and I hope it will stay the same

Great idea! We could call it "Maintenance Updates" or something and include the mileage and what we had done. I'm going over to the DIY+Maintenace forum and start it up

I don't know because I don't have mine yet. Whether or not someone keeps a car a long time really depends on how much trouble it has been. I tend to keep cars about 5 years. If it seems trouble-free around that time, I'll keep it. If there are lots of problems, I'll trade it in as the warranty nears expiration.
