What's a "low mileage oil change"?

Brough my car in to the dealership yesterday for its 3-year service.
On the paperwork it mentioned they performed a "low mileage oil change".

I do pay for an oil change out my my pocket usually half way through the annual cycle.

Anyone seen this?

You get a free annual oil change under BMW warranty regardless of mileage, so they'd note "low mileage" if you hadn't driven whatever the recommended mileage is for oil changes. 10K miles maybe?

If you're within 1,200 miles of oil change service they can pull it ahead and change early.

AKA - Once you get to 1,200 on the ticker you should schedule service and take advantage of it

What is the oil change interval now?
I noticed after the service yesterday it looks like they set it for 5k.

15k miles I'm pretty sure and I perform my oil change well before that. 5k miles is well you should usually change the oil in performance oriented car unless you like waiting 15k miles and have your engine internals covered in slop.

If you get a "low mileage oil change", which is if you put less than 15k a year on your car (no knowledge of the 1,200 mile buffer mentioned above) they will not reset for CBS. You get your next oil change when the CBS recommends it. You get the following oil change either 15k or 1 year later with the same circumstances. Example:
year 1: at 9k miles on your car, get it changed under "low mileage" , no CBS reset
year 1.5: at 15k miles, or 6k miles since your last oil change, get your CBS reset and do the regular oil change,
year 2: at 20k miles, no oil change
year 2.5: at 22k miles, get annual oil change (annual from your last oil change) no CBS reset

P.S. all "unscheduled" oil changes that are in-between warrantied maintenance do not have them reset the CBS. That's why you're getting your annual.

Anything you pay for out of pocket is not counted in the way they calculate warrantied oil changes. Hope this is clear...

This. My car had 15k miles total in 4 years and had 8 oil changes in that time frame lol

Do I violate the terms of CPO if I do my own oil and CBS resets? Am I screwed if something touching oil breaks?

You can do your own oil changes. Just keep a record that you're buying genuine LL-01 certified oil and a genuine BMW oil filter with it's washers/o-ring.

Afaik the rule is that if they're not paying for maintenance, they can't force you to use the dealer to maintain your warranty.
