Is the Armrest in the Way?
Hi folks,
I'm moving from a 5 speed E46 coupe to a 2009 135 M Sport 6 speed in a few days and I have one niggling question. When I drive my E46, I have to raise the armrest to allow for a comfortable shifting position. Is it the same in a 1 Series and if so, can the armrest be raised? I've only had the opportunity to drive an automatic and I'll be travelling 6 hours for the new car. Thanks for your help and Merry Christmas! |

Doesn't get in the way at all for me, i actually use it on highway trips as its quite comfortable to lean on. However if you don't like it it can be leaned up and out of the way.

I came from a 5-speed E36 and the armrest in my 128i always made shifting awkward, so I have the armrest tilted up.

Never had an issue personally. Most of the time when I've seen people an issue with the center arm rest in a driver's car, their real problem is their driving position.

the armrest is pretty crappy in that you can't use the cupholder for anything unless you want to smash the cup with the armrest!! other than that i find it quite comfortable.

I put the armrest up when the dog is in the back. Keeps his proboscis out of the front.

Besides not being able to use the cup holder it's fine for me. I don't slouch when I drive and it never gets in the way. Though I have found that I can't put any drink in the front cup holder and shift normally. I leave mine down.

I haven't had any problems with it all. Having said that, it easily disappears when you raise it up.

90% of the time mine is down and I love it, 8% of the time it is up because I need to carry 2 cups and I love it, 2% of the time it's awkward and I'm displeased with it due to reasons posted above. It's really a matter of the entire center console being so narrow and BMW insisting on the armrest opening for storage. A simple padded plank armrest and built in center console storage would have been sweet, but don't let it scare you away from 1.
