And so if it's unlikely to help me, why take a chance the thing kills me instead?

I had a five-panel Wink mirror in my E36 and I disconnected the airbag controller because deployment of the bags would have shattered that mirror and sent shards of glass spraying me in the face. That didn't seem like something I would have enjoyed. Same kind of logic might apply here?

Hmm.....
I would never be so foolish. Look up the statistical odds associated with the Takata recall and the airbag producing shrapnel when deployed, and then compare with how much more likely an airbag is to save your life or prevent serious injury during an accident. The airbag deploying and shattering the 5 panel mirror in your E36 is a completely different scenario.

Appreciate your comments, honestly I was hoping for more to chime in

And if it's any consolation, there is a fresh article from AP saying that GM is recalling another 200K Saturn and Saab cars to replace Takata driver's side air bag inflators.

All of this makes me wonder much confidence should we have in the replacement part...

The recall is massive. My Honda received new airbags last year, as did a family member's Toyota Sequoia. I used to own an E46, which was also affected by this same recall, albeit a few years after I wrecked the car.

As far as having confidence in the replacement parts, I wouldn't really think twice about it. I've been in a few pretty bad accident in my life, and only the side curtain airbags deployed. The odds of getting in an accident aren't necessarily in your favor, but the likelihood of the airbags deploying is far lower, and the likelihood of an airbag producing shrapnel is almost statistically negligible. But, these companies are legally bound to cover defects and design flaws like this.

I figured it was just a matter of time until my VIN produced a hit, but it's official now: add me to the list of affected owners.

I realize that tock172 says that the chances of triggering a shrapnel-producing airbag are "statistically insignificant," and I sincerely hope he's right. I'm inclined to agree, considering the massive scope of this recall, spanning multiple manufacturers and literally tens of millions of vehicles, versus the number of deaths and injuries (respectively 10 and 100, AFAIK).

Still, it's a bit unnerving knowing that there is potentially a grenade sitting in your steering wheel.

I think it's going to hit all 1ers. How is Takata possibly still in business with replacing every product it made? Maybe the ones sold to the rest of the world are keeping it afloat

Except The're likely doing it for free and paying for part of the cost of replacement.

i believe i read the chance is currently ~2% of having a deployed airbag be faulty

I now have two cars (an E82 and an E46) awaiting new airbags. The E46 has been a looong wait...

I've been wondering the same thing, but the answer is pretty simple: I'm almost sure Takata is backstopped by the Japanese government.

2%? Where did you get that? One in every fifty steering wheel airbag deployments kills (or at least seriously injures) the driver? Not intending to challenge you, just looking for information (I've been wondering about this myself).

From that article. :wtf:

"UPDATE 2/17/2016, 6:15 p.m.: According to a report in the New York Times, Takata executives allegedly withheld test results from its defective airbag inflators and destroyed evidence as early as 2000. A top Takata executive is alleged to have ordered that failed parts be “discarded” and doctored a report."

It was for the honda accord apparently, other cars were less 0.51%

there are probably a ton of variables involved in the failure rate

Entered my VIN and it shows one open recall for drivers side airbag. I hope I don't get in a wreck before they can replace it!

The worst part, apparently they don't actually know why this is happening. They suspect it is due to high humidity affecting the explosive. They still don't know if the replacements will actually fix anything.

...and hence my worry and why I'm considering disconnecting the thing (I live a mile from The Gulf and it's damn humid here most of the year... and I have amazing skin because of it, I love the stuff).
