1M Replacement battery note

Hello all!

Sorry if this is old news, but I couldn't find this information while searching the forum this weekend.

Just for awareness - if you try to get a replacement battery from your dealer, the online catalog doesn't currently contain the correct battery.

On Saturday I wasted a couple of hours after being given a big 860 CCA battery... when I brought that back they tried to give me a 680 CCA battery. The parts guy went to talk to a tech and they weren't able to find the right battery for the 1M.

This morning the parts guy called BMW NA and apparently there is 775 CCA battery that is now being used for the 1M. It's not in the catalog but they are stocked in the US. If the dealer calls BMW NA they can get the details.

Fortunately I managed to find an Autocraft AGM battery (strangely it was labeled Gold instead of Platinum, but in all respects it was the same as the Platinum that seems to be OOS everywhere) at a nearby Advance Auto Parts on Saturday night but those mostly appear to be OOS at this point as well. They had actually sold the last Platinum-labeled version literally 5 minutes before I arrived. I was briefly very unhappy until they found the Gold-labeled battery in the back, and it tested "good".

Fortunately the actual battery swap was a breeze after I ran to Harbor Freight to get a socket wrench extension to reach the bolts at the bottom of the battery well. I'm heading to the dealer soon so I'll have them re-register the battery along with the recall and some other service I need to have performed.

Good info!

Are you planning on sticking with the aftermarket battery or do you plan on going back to OEM now that the part number mystery has been solved? What is the model # of the aftermarket battery you got?

I think I'm going to stick with the aftermarket since it's installed and seems to be working fine. However, if I have a problem in the future AND if BMW has batteries in the US that they can readily identify, I'll go back to OEM.

I have decided that the battery I got is probably an earlier run of what Advance Auto now brands as the "Platinum" AGM Battery, size H6. I think they probably used to sell it as GOLD (which is the one I bought) but at some point decided to call all the AGMs PLATINUM to avoid confusion with non-AGM Gold batteries. All the platinum batteries appear to be AGM.

Here's the link the the Platinum. The Gold is no longer on the website:

By the way, the Autocraft battery was about $100 cheaper even taking into account the 15% parts discount I would have gotten from the dealer.

I'm taking the car to get smogged tomorrow if I can get home from work on time so I can renew the registration, and then I'll be bringing it in the dealer for battery registration amongst a variety of other refresher services. The car has been stored for quite a while, hence the dead battery (trickle charger issues... And I refuse to clarify whether said issues were hardware or user based!).

Anyway I hope to have it back on the road in the very near future, I miss it.

sjw985 > I'm in the same boat man. Getting the right battery part number is proving to be difficult. Did they ever give you the proper part number for the 1M OEM battery?

sjw985 > Yeah...that's the one I ordered -- too big (at least that was my experience). When I was at the dealer picking up the part, it was immediately obvious that they got it wrong. Not to say that others won't get lucky, but I had a hell of a hard time. I even called BMW NA, but they were pretty incompetent as well.

After two weeks (and having read your post), I just let it go. I got the 760-CCA Autocraft AGM battery. I was in-and-out of the auto-parts store in 5 minutes.

Same, it was a drop in replacement. I'm glad you found one. I'm heading to the dealer for post-storage freshening on Tuesday, and looking forward to having it back on the road soon.

Do you plan on having them code the new battery in?

By the way, why didn't you just get your battery replaced under warranty?

Recoding tomorrow - I expect on a courtesy basis since they made me drive all the way out to the dealership twice to pick up incorrect batteries.

As for why not replace under warranty - I never even considered it, since I'm a fair-minded person and the dead battery was obviously my fault. The car was not driven much after the first year, and then sat for an extended period with (though I didn't realize it at the time) a bad trickle charger.

I'm willing to pay a stupid tax when it comes due.

Fair enough.

I use my 1M daily and even then my battery needed to be replaced about 6 months ago (about 2.5 years of use). It was replaced under warranty.

To confirm...

The stock 1M battery is not an AGM battery right?
