130i engine swap, how much?

Hi guys,

I am just absolutely in love with my 130i, the size, the engine, gearshift etc etc....

It is coming up to the end of its CHP (commercial hire purchase) soon and I really dont want to drive anything else....

I was instead thinking of paying the residual and doing some major mods. Since there are no superchargers available on the market, do you think an engine swap would be possible and much would the outlay be?

I have done some googling and read about the Hartge 1 series (basically a 1 series with a huge M5 V8 under the hood!) I also know the Hartge 1 series is ridiculously expensive, probably not made or road drivable here, and probably a crazy idea, however i was just wondering about the general feasibility of and engine swap, whether the car would even be road worthy in Australia if i could come up with the bucks to do a swap.

Thoughts? A waste of money?

Joe

For $$$ buy e46 M3! Because you don't want to install N54-N55 without big upgrades while engine will be laying around BIG Turbos, intercooler etc etc

The Z4M runs a S54 engine (out of the E46 M3) whereas the 130i has an N52 which is more difficult/tricky to supercharge from what i've read...

And valvetronic tends to bend us over the bench for supercharging.

The ARMA kit is really expensive (~10k) and the results are a bit questionable... not many people have adopted it.

Yeh Gavin from MMW is working on an N52 SC kit, it's taking a while though. The N52 really wasn't designed for supercharging.

Issues with the N52 stem from it's magnesium block amongst other things, so it's really not a great basis for supercharging plus it's already a pretty highly strung NA motor..

Do the V8/V10 swap... for the WOW factor lol.

Do you have any mechanical or electrical knowledge? If so, you can save A LOT of money and hassles by doing the majority of the swap yourself.

What I would do is buy a damaged car (I6TT/V8 etc) and implant the whole lot into the car. Considering write off laws have become much stricter as of January, the prices for a damaged car has taken a big hit as only wreckers (well majority) would be buying them now. No more backyard dodgy repair jobs lol....

Depends what kind of condition the car is in however. If you're lucky enough, you could find a 135i with its ass end demolished but with front intact. From what I've seen at auctions lately, this should only fetch about 10-15k max. IIRC, there's a company in Germany which has manufactured N54 and S65 engine mounts for the humble 130i.

130tt would be sweet, but make sure you do all the investigation first (such as console, dash, electrics etc being retrofitable).

M5 drop would also be nice. Check the German 1 series forum (www.1erforum.de) using google translate for more info of that Hartge swap. e39 v8 is an option as well.

Send me a PM if you'd like help tracking down a suitable parts car.
