it's kinda like calling the e36 3 series an M3, or the e46 3 series an m3 and marketing them as a new e30 M3 (purpose built race car)

The problem with that logic is that the E30 M3 was based off of the E30 3-series. The M1 was a standalone mid-engine supercar.

may want to check which department designed the sport suspension on the 128/135

those little M department emblems are there for a reason

That car should have been an M. The engine got an S-code, not the usual M/N code, the VIN started with WBS, and they also came with manual transmissions only, as has every M car but the US E36 M3.
