Any news on the M1?

Apparently BMW isn't confirming or denying that they are building an M1. In fact, many say they're already making it. Anybody else have some news?

I think most purists would be up in arms about the recycling of the "M1" nomenclature. Looking at the pictures I seriously doubt they could wedge the V8 under the hood. The car already has a twin-turbo I6 and M-sport styling... what more could you ask for!??!?

Ehh... I'm pretty sure BMW have said numerous times to anyone who's asked that they are definitely not building an M1. In fact, I've never heard anyone say anything to the contrary other than internet speculation.

Please feel free to provide evidence to the contrary, otherwise I wish people would quit posting crap about their second cousin who heard from his sister's boyfriend's professor's BMW dealer that the 135 will be here in October for $27,500 and the M1 will be here in March for under $40k.

Sorry to take it out on you; you're not the first and definitely not the last.

I agree. There isn't a logical engine choice for an M model, and the 135i appears to have all the goodies anyway, including 300hp.

The news is still the same. This sites only credible source(who is BMW's unconfirmed mouthpiece to this site) has said their is one in development. The date of release is unknown. It would be foolish of them to announce they are making one when the 135i isnt even out yet. Keep an eye out for spy shots.

I think the smart money is on them not producing a new M1.

The August Roundel states otherwise. "Heard on the Strasse" page 34 has a small write up on the topic.

Only time will tell but the general consensus is that the car will not be built. Not much else to discuss really...

Well, IF BMW will be releasing M1 we will not hear about it until some time after 1 series comes out on sale. They are in car selling business and they want you to buy that 128i/135i first and then when it all said and done and you fell in love with your 1 series they will offer you M1.

I believe the 135i will directly impact e92 M3 Sales.
Imagine what an M1 would do?

I still say no M1. IMHO

a 335i was out prior to the m3

if a 335i and m3 can co-exist then a 135i and M1 can certainly co-exist as well.

The engine in the M1 would probably be the 3.2L from the E46 M3 /Z4M, which isn't such a leap from the 3.0L TT engine, as the 4.0L V8 in the new E92 M3.

However, I agree that they could co-exist, but only if the M1 shed at least 100Kg (which would make it CSL-ish), and had the M-diff, no RFTs, mechanical power steering. Otherwise - what significant differences would there be except for an NA ~340hp Vs FI ~300hp (easily tuneable beyond the reach of the NA engine).

very true however i wonder what new engines bmw has in the works? people always seem to look to currently produced engines but we're speculating about a car that's at least a few years out.

of course the counter-argument is that - unlike the 335i - the 135i supposedly will come with an upgraded suspension and breaks.

should be fun to watch what happens. given how long it takes to get a car from clay to production, I'm certain bmw has already decided.

What could you change on the 1 series(135i) to justify an M badge besides the engine? The 135i is already getting 6 piston brakes for example. The M3 doesn't even get those.

You can make the argument for a 128i and an M1, but not all three. The 135i and the M1 would just be toooo close in performance.

I believe the 135i is a hybrid BMW. Not a true M1, but not just a 1 series either.

I agree with you. The 135i is already a little beast. I also believe it has more power potential than a normally aspirated m engine. I was more interested in what additional features it may have.
I wouldn't put it beyond them to make another limited production club racer of it, just like they did with the e36 m3.
The tuning and performance potential alone makes me want the 135i.

I could see them doing a lightweight version but with the Aluminum block I doubt they'll up the power. I would be worried to increase boost at all without some reinforced internals.

Thank you sir! Just wait and see. People shouldnt worry about what engine their going to put in it. It probably wont be anything in production right now. Gotta stop being so close minded....dream. Instead of knocking the idea, get excited that BMW would even dare to top the N54 with an NA car. Sheeesh.

^where did you hear/read that? that would be perfect. no it doesnt make sense to put both in the lineup, if they made a M1 the 135 would cease production. itd be a high revving inline N/A 6, lsd, CF roof, stiffer suspension etc.

and as was said, why would they admit to an upcoming M1 if theyre trying to sell 135s?
