Do you really think BMW would release a motor that isnt ''superior" to the N54?

Allegedly, we'll see the concept.

probably. There isn't a stock 4 in the world thats as good as N54... There are plenty that make more power with huge turbos, but none are as good down low, as smooth, as linear and N54... There is no replacement for displacement..

BMW 4 banger probably wont have lag, it will probably have 2 or 4 small turbos that spool really fast... Anything with turbo has torque, so dont worry.
and BMW will keep N54 in next gen. 1 series as well, or so they are hinting..
So dont worry.. future looks bright..
Personally I'd take 2900lb N54 beast.

I like that line, "There is no replacement for displacement". Good one!

Yeah I have heard that one a lot, never about a 3.0l 6 cylinder that was turbocharged. It is usually what people say when they have a big displacement v-8 and are putting down forced induction cars.

I think I'd stick with the N54 with a few more horses, if offered. No 4 cyl sounds as good as a 6, in my experience.

Since BMW want to keep the 3 series on top for now. I would like BMW to take a stingy approach and make the ///M version of the 1 series have an NA I-6 producing around 330HP a la E46 M3 and have the M3 have a turboed version of that engine.

But there is no hope of that...looks like 4 banger it is. If it is i'm out. I don't want a farty sounding ///M.

More news:
http://motoring.sky.com/news/next-bm...r-engines.aspx

The new engines will be turbocharged to ensure that the legendary BMW performance remains despite the 1,350cc capacity. A larger, 1.8-litre, four-cylinder engine will power the more upmarket models. Here’s a list of the new engine line-up:

x16i – 1.35-litre, 3-cylinder, 163bhp/140 lb-ft
x18i – 1.35-litre, 3-cylinder, 201bhp/162 lb-ft
x20i – 1.35-litre, 3-cylinder, 241bhp/192 lb-ft
x23i – 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder, 273bhp/220 lb-ft
x25i – 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder, 321bhp/258 lb-ft

The engines are currently in the development stage and are said to be two years away from production reality so the figures above are set to change slightly. Nevertheless they are more powerful, torquier and presumably cleaner than the current range.

Engine downsizing is the next big thing – the Mercedes E250 CGI’s turbocharged 1.8-litre engine shows that that it’s a win-win in terms of performance and economy. This is a 1.8-litre, large saloon that’s fast enough to have to be electronically limited to 155mph yet with the CO2 emissions of your average supermini.

Don't worry though – BMW isn't got to stop building straight-six and V8 engines just yet.

We’ll bring you more details as they emerge but for now we’re going to be daydreaming about how a turbocharged BMW 3-cylinder will sound…

well i am waiting for the 123d or even better a 135d. I'd love to see a lightened and tuned 135d, 300hp, 500 ft-lbs and 3000lb weight, with a stick. At that weight it would still probably muster a solid 40-45 mpg on the hwy, that's what I'm talking about!

135d would be pointless.... Engine is too heavy to sit in front of 1 and there is absolutely no need for it.. Many are angry for BMW for not bringing 323d to USA... 200hp, 300+ torque is more than enough for that car, plus it would be about 200lb lighter than 335d... and get 50mpg...

My concern, of which I hope will be alleviated, is when you have only 4 pistons doing the work of 6 or 8, it is more stress, and therefore the engine won't last as long or will be more problematic.

8 pistons pushing 300hp is easy. 6 pistons pushing 300hp is not bad but extra work. Now, we get down to 4 pistons doing the work that it used to take 8 pistons. I know we have new technology every day. But that is a lot. Plus, extra pressure means that seals and gaskets blow out quicker as well.

As I mentioned, I hope my concerns are alleviated.

And yes, they should have brought the diesel over here.
