2010: BMW M1 - dusk for 135i?

Rumors have it, that BMW may come up with an "M" model of the 1series in 2010, with somewhat around 350 hp. I d be interested in wether or not you guys believe we will actually get an M1 - and what you think we will be doing with all the 135i's and M3's then?

Since there are only 5 months until 2010 models go into production, I would say your rumors are completely false.
BMW has suggested they may make a performance version of the 1, but it was unclear what that meant beyond combining all of the existing performance parts most of which are cosmetic. We are still waiting for the performance engine upgrade to be offered. If that's the heart of the performance 1 (they've said 100 times it won't be an "M1"), then guess what? we can all pretty much do the same upgrades which will suit me fine.

Clearly they wont name it M1, since there s too much history in that name. But we would miss the point conducting a model name discussion - you think its likely we will get a model above the 135i in 2010?

Except for the rumored weight reduction which would be quite welcomed.

I have no idea...will I have e82 envy for the M1? Will it be enough to get rid of my 135i in favor of an M1? I guess I'll feel like a Integra GS-R owner looking at an Integra Type-R...(my previous car). I'll be experiencing that feeling from the otherside of the window, so to speak. I can remember driving and seeing people's mouths go, "Oh s#it, Type-R." Now they'll be the one's seeing my mouth going, "Oh s#it, M one!"

Now that there's an official sub topic, does this mean this car is for sure?

edit- whether it be M1 1M Tii SS what haveyou, its about time that BMW realized that the can still push this n54 engine substantially more than they did with still preserving its reliability

Good points Mega.. I wonder the same thing.. I have always been an early adopter, and buy move toward cars that poineer new grounds.. My first new car, a 2002 WRX arguably changed the automotive landscape in North America forever. Though less so, the 135i has done the same. I remember pining for the STi and then finally have it come a couple years after I bought the WRX soon after its inception. And now with the 135. Will this ever stop???!!! I wonder how many of us are in the same dillemna.

Cause you all know what will happen right??! As soon as the M1 drops, their will be the new version a year or two later that we will desire. Maybe the answer is to just enjoy what we have until we can't stand it anymore.. I'd like to hear more feedback 135 owners.. Especially early adopters.. Dave aka izzo aka comeback, ChrisK.. I know you've been waiting for this the whole time S2K..

The current 135i, modestly equipped you are in the low 40's.

If the M1 or whatever its called is going to be above 50k I would like to see more than additional 20-30 hp.

I would pick up an e92 M3 that's one year old for probably the same, if not less cash.

I'm happy with my 135i, and will prob do JB3 when I get bored.

The "M1" will NOT have an N54. It will be the N55. The "iS" versions coming like in the Z4 will be the N54.

From the current specs mentioned, I'm not willing to pay in the 50's for an M1 and get roasted by a 135 with $10K in mods. That puts both at ~ same cost. And if you think to mod the M1, then that's just big dollars and kind of makes no sense on the price range.
Even to simply enjoy the M1 (however it comes) seems costly if it truly doesn't give an instant erection, and I doubt it will. Think about it, if you get in an M3 after driving the 135, you kind of think to yourself "yeah, it's all right but nothing wow". So I'm sure the M1 will be better stock wise than the 135 but not better than an M3 so is it truly $10K+ worth it? Amazing what that //M does...

Will it be a collectors car because it's new/revived in its series or because it will truly be something sensational?

BMW also said they'd never make an M-based SUV....and lookie lookie.
I don't know what to believe and I'm not supporting BMW any more if all they're looking to do is move more units.

The ///M is more than just power to get a fast time in some race, IMO. Plus, the M will be able to hold a warranty (i.e. CPO) through 100k with the power output that it has. What we know from the DCT, MT discussions is that the 6-sp will NOT handle the power that that $10k in mods puts out and enable 100k in warranty life.

It is very well that some people like car manufacturers to respect their history. It is a business after all. The sole purpose of its existence is to move more units.

To me the a M car is all about balanced - as long as it got there, it doesn't matter how it gets there. The recent review of the X5M from top gear showing an extremely respectable time around track. You might not think a X5 should ever be an M, but I can tell you BMW has definitely made the X5M worthy of a M badge.
