Sounds like you're going to get a very expensive M package with very little actual performance increases.
This is the argument for ages. With every iteration of M3 there's debate whether a based model can be modified as a more cost effective alternative to the M3. The latest 335i is by far the most compelling case, even so the opinions have slowly swayed towards the M3. The 1M will be no exception. M car has always been for people who values stock engineering and willing to pay more.

Wow! Less than 2900 lbs and 330 HP? Now there's something to look forward to.

Does anyone think they'll keep the 128i series or bump it up to 130i?

Garage List
2008 135i  [6.50]
I will tell you this much - you will NEVER see such a car until the current M3 is replaced and moved higher up the perfirmance ladder. BMW will not release a 1 that outperforms their standard bearer. So if you get tired of all the vague comments and hints from BMW, just watch and wait for the next M3. That would be first, then the uber-1.

Why not just call the super car simply "M"? This is very intriguing. I am glad there is a decent amount of time before this comes out, if it does at all. I like knowing I have the best 1 available. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like my 135i if an M1 came out, but there is a certain satisfaction with being at the top of the totem poll so to speak.

One can build a Baby M right now with M3 suspension pieces available at your local BMW dealer...add a good LSD...slightly wider wheels/tires...GIAC software flash, etc.

I dont know how this will play out since a lightly modified (correctly) 135i can give the M3 a good run. If they decide to keep the 6tt, are the differences going to justify the cost increase?

they already don't justify the cost increase IMO

It's not necessarily just about the speed and track times. The M5 is a much nicer quality and build than the M3 inside and out However, I don't see a big difference between the 1 and 3 though.

Also, the M5 a much bigger car with a bigger engine so theoretically you get more car for your money. For some people this is very reassuring. I personally would love an M5 but I would never need an M5, so I would get an M3. Ideally, I'm more than happy with the size of the 1 series so if BMW made an M1 I'd take that instead too. Who wouldn't want to save a few $$$ and get a smaller and more nimble (and possibly even faster) brand new M car?

Yea I know. You're probably right that an aftermarket boost kit can compete. It basically can hang with anything these days. They often dont feel as great as the real McCoy though.

I disagree

bigger <> better, they add some extra trim, but the build and quality on our company m5, the 2 740il's we had, was no better than my 1 series or my m3

people see the big badge and think it's better, it's all the same parts bin putting these cars together

they do add some nice finishing touches and extra trim bits, if your into that sorta thing, but it's really not built any better or any quality difference that I have been able to tell, those 740li's were the worst cars ever, nothing but problems, always in the shop, the company quit buying bmw's because of those 2 cars, now they buy lexus's bleh
